For many years, Aberdeen Football Club has been seeking a new ground on which to build much-needed training facilities and a new stadium.
Various sites have been considered but now we have the right location and a vision to deliver a dynamic, inspirational and inclusive community sports campus, football academy and stadium which will provide a lasting sporting and community legacy for the whole region.
We appreciate that there are genuine concerns among neighbouring communities and our intention is to address these by working together to ensure that local people benefit from the new facilities and amenities and that we become considerate and valued neighbours.
Sites which can accommodate a community sports campus, football academy and stadium are few and far between and all of those explored have pros and cons. However, we believe Kingsford is the right location primarily because of its accessibility, now that the AWPR is a reality. It is convenient for the majority of our fans who come from the North and North West and for away support. The site, formally used for landfill, is relatively flat, and crucially the club has concluded a missive to purchase over.
Our masterplan shows that the development will comprise three first team training pitches, three community 3G pitches, community pavilion with gym and multi-purpose space, 20,000 capacity stadium with multi-use space, AFC retail outlet, Reds café, AFC Heritage Museum, car park with 1340 spaces, bus parking and drop-off areas and boundary landscaping to mitigate visual and noise impact.
The project will deliver essential, modern training facilities, multi-sport and community facilities and a 21st century stadium that will provide an enhanced match-day experience. These will support the ambitions of the club and its fans, further the extensive AFC Community Trust work in the community and provide wider socio-economic benefits to the region.
George Yule, executive vice chairman of AFC said:
“This is a project of regional and national significance which every man, woman and child can get behind. The whole community can benefit: from fervent fans, families, budding sports stars and those who just want to get fit, from youth football clubs to community groups, the disadvantaged and disables to third sector organisations and business.
“We want the project to be a catalyst for greater sporting achievements across the region, for attracting today’s top class players and developing tomorrow’s footballing stars. It will help us achieve our ambitions of becoming a UEFA top 100 club, and for AFC Community Trust to be one of the top Community Trusts in the UK, using the power of football to inspire people to be active.
“Providing out-standing community facilities, we see this as being an educational, training, social and recreational resource, an employment and community hub everyone can enjoy and benefit from.”
