After an impressive 3-0 victory on the road over Spartans at the weekend, Aberdeen Women return home to the Balmoral Stadium this Sunday where they take on Hamilton Accies. Manager Clinton Lancaster spoke to RedTV to preview the game. RedTV subscribers can watch the interview at the top of this page.
“I thought that we played really well on Sunday against Spartans. It feels like it has been a little while coming where we were going to win connivingly like that. In most of the games that we’ve played we’ve played very well. It was a good performance from everybody on Sunday and a well deserved three points.
“Our strikers Hannah Stewart and Bayley Hutchison both got on the scoresheet on Sunday which will give them confidence. They have a great relationship and they work well together. Hannah’s goal was some strike as was Bayley’s second goal. All three goals were really good. I was most pleased with the third one because it was what we have been working on in training, how we can build from the back. I think the goal started from Faye and it worked its way into the back of the net.
“As coaches it is nice to see something that we have worked on come into practice. For them, they are a young group, the confidence they have to go and play and I want to give them the belief to go and play. If they make a mistake then its not the end of the world. If I come down to hard on them then they wont try again. I think it is important that I encourage them to play and to build and they are doing it with confidence now.
“We got a clean sheet on Sunday which was pleasing. It is important to work from the back to the front. It is a classic but if you don’t concede then the worst case scenario is you get a point. My initial target was to target a goalkeeper, we have recruited Faye and I am fortunate that we have some really good attacking players in the team. We have got some really good players. It was a case of working with the defence initially and what we have got there. I changed the shape from what they are used to. If you consider the age of the players that we have got at the back, they have been doing exceptionally well for us and the clean sheet was well deserved on Sunday.
“I have been up for a few months now. I rally enjoy it. I say it all the time but everybody has been great with me since I arrived. I like it here, the weather has been amazing, which I wont lie I was surprised about! I have been warned it will get colder! I have loved it and I am enjoying my time here.
“It is early days, we are only five games in but we have started incredibly well. We can’t get complacent, we need to make sure that we keep building on that and if we perform like we have been performing in games, we have played well. We played some really good football in the Hearts game. It is positive and we are just need to keep building on that now.”
With no men’s game this weekend, we are encouraging as many members of the Red Army to get along to the Balmoral Stadium. Full ticket information for Sunday’s game can be found here.
