Montrose v Aberdeen Women Preview | Mia Selbie

Mia 1

Off the back of marking her full debut with a goal, an assist, and a win last time out, young forward Mia Selbie previewed Aberdeen Women’s trip to Montrose this weekend, while also reflecting on a busy couple weeks for the 16-year-old.

Ticket's for Sunday's game at Links Park, a 1pm kick-off, can be purchased by clicking here.

“Starting the game at Hamilton was so unexpected. To be fair, I wasn’t too nervous when I was in the game, but before, warming up, I was nervous!

“Then as soon as I started playing and I got a touch on the ball, I was fine. I never imagined I’d score, I just wanted to make an impact, and then to get a goal was just amazing.

“I honestly didn’t expect it at all. I just saw my name on the screen in the line-up when we were going over the team in the meeting on Saturday, and that was it. It was amazing to see.”

Alongside Mia on Sunday was Erin Carrol, the young pair making their first starts for the first team together.

“100%, sharing that experience with Erin made it easier. Being able to talk it through with her – she is always quite chill about stuff like that; she deals with it well. To be fair I think we’re quite similar. It was just really good having one of your good friends there to do it with you.”

An inch perfect cross in the first ten minutes found the head of Francesca Ogilvie to send The Dons on the right path in Hamilton, Mia playing a key role in the goal.

“Getting the assist so early in the game made me more confident, especially on the ball. It just made me more relaxed. It was not a bad cross. I’ve watched it just a few times.”

And then comes the goal in the second half, Selbie’s header creeping over the line. Whether it was over the line or not was never in question.

“100% it was! I wasn’t sure if the referee was going to give it, but I was buzzing when they did. All the girls were so good, congratulating me, praising me, so that made it even better.

“My family were so happy. My Mum travelled down, so going over after the game and seeing her was another special moment.

“The biggest difference I have found from the 17s to the First Team is the pace, and also the expectations. There’s a lot more pressure, but I like that.

“Getting minutes in the Motherwell game the week before helped me understand how I’d feel in the game. Training is fast, but matches are a different level physically, so it helped.”

As we head into the final four games of the season, the challenge is now for Selbie to keep her place in the XI. What can people expect to see between now and the end of the campaign?

“I’m a creative player. I try to go forward a lot and be brave on the ball. I feel best playing out wide.

“I’m an Aberdeen fan, it makes the whole thing special. Scoring for your club is surreal.

Next up for The Dons, the challenge of Montrose at Links Park.

“I’ll just try to do the same as Hamilton, impact the game as much as I can, and stay confident in my abilities.

“I have just trying to keep improving, enjoying it, and help the team.

“I know about Montrose matches. They are quite physical games, but I’m looking forward to it.

“Training has been really good of the back of Hamilton. Everybody has been positive and training well.

“We understand the situation we are in now with four games to go.

"If we stick together as a team, we can get what we need”
