Hamilton 2 – 2 Aberdeen New Douglas Park SWPL1 Sunday February 1st 2026
The Dons were on the road on Sunday afternoon, travelling to New Douglas Park to face Hamilton. With a game in hand and in high spirits after seeing off Motherwell, the Dons could have leapfroged the teams around them into seventh with a victory in Glasgow.
Scott Booth made no changes to the side which triumphed at the Balmoral last weekend. January recruits Brodie Greenwood and Naomi McLaughlin were named on the bench.
Report
It was a fast start in Glasgow, with both sides threatening to find the back of the net within the first five minutes.
Darcie Miller was first to have a sight of goal, flashing a volley wide of the post from the corner of the box after good work by Hannah Stewart within the opening minute, before Katie Cox was forced into a stretching save after Josephine Giard’s cross threatened to loop over the Chelsea loanee.
Hamilton began to take control of the contest, showing winning their individual duels across the park.
The home side would be rewarded for their efforts, breaking the deadlock 18 minutes in. Picking up a loose Maddie Finnie header, Josephine Giard drove to the edge of the penalty area before unleashing a curling effort which found the back of the net, leaving Cox no chance.
It didn’t take the Dons long to find a response, firing back with an equaliser in the 22nd minute. Good work in the midfield saw Hannah Stewart released in behind who after wriggling between multiple Accies defenders inside the area, released a shot. Her effort was parried by Halliday into the path of Darcie Miller who could not miss, getting Aberdeen back on level terms.
The equaliser provided a boost of confidence for Scott Booth’s side who began to up the ante, now looking on top in the contest.
Yet, it was Hamilton who would reassume the advantage, this time from the penalty spot. A cross into the Dons area was met by Muir, who dragged the ball back across the box and into the path of goal scorer Giard. Cox rushed out to smother the striker, catching her heels in the process and conceding a spot kick.
Georgia Gray stepped up and, despite Cox getting a hand to her effort, found the bottom left corner, putting Hamilton back in front.
Aberdeen looked to peg the home side back before the interval, and should’ve done so 42 minutes in.
Francesca Ogilvie showed great pace to drive down the Accies left and drive a low ball into the box, falling on a plate for Bridget Galloway from 15 yards. Galloway’s strike provided relief for Halliday, flying past the keeper’s right hand post.
That was the last action of the first 45, with Scott Booth’s team needing a big second half performance.
Half-time: Hamilton 2 – 1 Aberdeen
Aberdeen made a double change after the break, looking to inspire a second half fightback. Mya Christie and Kerry Beattie entered the fray in place of Abi Tobin and Aimee Black.
The Dons saw the first sight of goal 50 minutes in, Stewart’s corner found the head of Finnegan whose towering header flew just past Halliday’s left hand post.
One minute later and it was another great chance for Aberdeen. Ogilvie’s delivery caused confusion in the area, with the ball falling to substitute Beattie after multiple failed clearances. The strikers on the turn volley from 15 yards could only find the advertising boards.
57 minutes on the clock, and the Dons had now struck the crossbar. Driving down the left, Ogilvie evaded McStay and fashioned a half yard of space to release a shot. Halliday matched the effort, but could only parry onto the back of her teammate, ricocheting off the Accies crossbar.
The home side had barely exited their half, yet the Dons still couldn’t find a leveller.
The woodwork was skelped once again by Aberdeen on the 66th minute, this time directly from a Hannah Stewart corner, the rebound trickling to safety.
Scott Booth introduced McLaughlin for her Dons debut with 13 left to play with Bridget Galloway making way.
A minute later, the Dons pressure finally paid off. An over the top ball set Darcie Miller chasing who had it all to do from the corner of the box. With little options, she chose to shoot, looping her effort over the head of Halliday and into the Accies net.
Accies looked to hit back immediately and almost did so on the 83 minute. A break of the ball allowed Hamilton substitute Alex Davie to assume possession and bear down on goal. One-on-one with Cox, the shot stopper made herself big and excellently denied what looked to be a certain goal.
The Dons had regained control of the contest after that scare and were now pushing for the winning goal.
Aberdeen thought they had the winner a minute into stoppage time. Hannah Stewart’s dead ball from deep sailed over the Accies defence and almost found Finnegan, but the defender was unable to get a strong enough touch, the ball trickling out.
5 minutes into added time and the Dons couldn’t believe they hadn’t found the winner. Stewart’s corner was delivered dangerously into the box and, through a sea of bodies which included Katie Cox, the ball was knocked goalward. A last ditch goal line clearance from Accies stopped a certain goal, with Aberdeen’s protests unable to convince the referee that the ball was in.
That was the final action of the match, as the Dons dropped points in a frantic affair.
Full-time: Hamilton 2 – 2 Aberdeen
