Back at Pittodrie

“Every game’s a big game at home. You’re expected to win your home games. So it’s an opportunity for us to get back to winning ways. And then it could look very different in ten days’ time.

“There has been some good stuff. The end product has to be better. We know that, of course, and that takes time, that understanding. There are good points in every game and there’s critical moments in every game, and the critical moments went against us on Wednesday night.

“But we’ve looked at that, we move on from that and we’re ready to go for Saturday.

“These games they’ve been involved in (Kilmarnock) have been fine lines. They’ve lost the games on decisions and final product. They’ve got good players. I know quite a lot of the players there. They’ve got a good manager in Neil.

“We won’t have any illusions that it’s going to be an easy game. It’s a tough, tough game. We’re very, very early into the season, so the league table at this moment in time doesn’t really matter.

“It’s a tough game. We have to be right at the top of our game. Lessons from the previous two or three, and an opportunity to take the game to them and get back to winning ways."

The Transfer Window

“There’s still windows open around the world, so you’re constantly looking. You know, some people are being paid off, so that’s obviously options for us as well.

“But they have to be the right players. That’s maybe the problem, if everything’s done at the last minute, then your due diligence isn’t done. Because if the right person appears that you know will make the team better, then of course we’ll certainly have a look at that.

“I personally didn’t have talks with him (Greg Docherty). I can assure you that I’ve never spoke to Greg. But Greg’s among a number of players who have been paid up or released and are available, and that’s obviously a market we’re still looking at.

“If you were to do things before the window when you’re not prepared, you can make big mistakes. We’ll continue looking. Greg’s one of those people. But I certainly haven’t spoken to Greg.

“Yeah, Daniel Klein will be done this morning.

“He makes the goalkeeping department better. It makes it stronger. An experienced goalkeeper, bring league experience as well. We have to try and make every department as strong as possible.

“If we get an injury to Marius, then we certainly have very, very good backup. And as I say, the three goalkeepers now competing for a place means that nobody’s guaranteed to play."

Summer Reflections

“There has been that much change. Of course, you can’t do it all in one window. You know, that’s not excuses. You can’t, it’s physically impossible, the number of outgoings and the amount of incomings.

“But I believe the squad’s in a stronger position than it was. Ultimately, you try and come out of a window stronger than what you went into.

“And if you include all the loan players that left at the end of last season as well, I believe that’s maybe 16, 17 players altogether that have left. It’s been a huge transition.

“Are we stronger than what we finished? I certainly believe we are.

Team News

“He’ll be touch and go for the game (Dan Happe). Yeah, we’ll look at him this morning. It was a last-minute injury, which caused us to change bits and pieces that we were going to do, but hopefully, fingers crossed, he’ll get through the session today.

“No, everybody else seems to have come through. It’s a quick turnaround from Celtic Park. We got back late on Wednesday night, so we’ll see how everybody responds this morning. But at this moment in time, everybody seems to have come through."

Belief in the group

“It’s belief. The belief in their ability, the belief that I see every day in training. And we’ve seen that in large parts in the second half.

“But, as we said, and as the group agreed, it was too late to show that. We need that from the off. We need that belief from the off.

“And we got punished by a clinical goal, a fantastic goal for the first one. You know, sometimes you have to look back and go, a really good goal, there’s not a whole lot you can do. We can be a little bit tighter, of course. But there’s bits to take from it, but also you have to put that to bed very quickly and move on.

"Our season won’t be defined by losing at Celtic Park. I think it’s been a long time since we won at Celtic Park. So we have to now concentrate on going forward and what we can do against Kilmarnock and going forward in the next couple of weeks.

“Time (when asked how do you instil belief in the group). But you don’t get time in football, so that’s down to me.

“It’s up to me and the staff to give them that belief, to understand that they’re not going to be vilified every time they make a mistake by us. And that belief grows. I believe that has shown in patches, and it’s now trying to get that consistency.

“And as I say, judging is tough, tough period in the last four days because of the fixture list. And we now must put that in the bin. We can’t dwell on those situations. You have to look forward. You can’t change that. I look forward to the two Kilmarnock games."

Looking forward to it

“I think there’s pressure every time you play at home for Aberdeen to win games. You’re expected to win, so it’s no different than any other game for me.

“It’s important to win the game, whatever way we do it. We have a game plan that we’re going to follow. We won’t deviate too much from what we do. That’s what we’re trying to get, this consistency in terms of our play and what we want to do and how we build.

“We aim to do that. Will there be a freshness in the team again? Boys that come back fighting to make sure they’re in the team. So we’ll get a reaction to that as well from the boys that came off at half-time.

“We’re looking forward to it. You go into the game expecting to win and know that we have to be at the top of our game to do that.

“It’s good (mood in the dressing room). There is still a belief. It has to be a realism as well, that we’ve been beaten by Celtic 3-0. We lost that penalty against Rangers. If you look at the millions and millions that have been spent on those two squads, we haven’t had the luxury to do that.

“So there has to be a realism, but also a belief that we can bridge the gap, that we can progress, which we will do, and that will take time. But I’m very, very confident in the group we’ve put together."

The future of Scottish Football

“I think there’s a lot more educated people in Scottish football than me. I believe Alan Burrows is there today and other members of every board, so I think the right people are in that meeting. I’ve got enough to concentrate on.

“I’m probably not the right person to make those decisions. I think if young players are good enough, they play. I’ve shown that throughout my career. I put young players in, give them debuts and give them opportunities if I believe that’s right.

“They have to be better than what’s in the team. That’s the simple thing. They have to be better because you have to win football matches in a 12-team league."

A tricky fixture list

“I alluded to it a little bit after Wednesday night. We’ve been tested very, very hard early on with the fixture list, with a new group still trying to bond. So we weren’t quite up to that test, if the truth be told. We weren’t quite up to it in terms of results. Some of the bits were good.

“But we get better and better as it goes, and we’ve got an opportunity now to build on something.

“Kilmarnock is a tough game. As I say, there’s very, very few games being played in the season so far. So, you know, to be that judgemental that early on is crazy.

“I’ll judge the team when we’re 15 games in, and then what we need and where we go from there."
