Aberdeen FC is delighted to announce this evening that Shay Logan has committed his long-term future to the club. The right back has signed a new deal which will see him remain at Pittodrie until 2020.

The 29-year-old joined Aberdeen in January 2014 on loan from Brentford and then signed a permanent two-year contract that summer. In April 2016, he signed an additional contract until the end of this season. Over the past three and a half years Shay has made 161 appearances and scored 13 goals. He has also been named in the SPFL team of the year for three consecutive years, highlighting his position as the best right back in the country.

Shay spoke to RedTV after putting pen to paper:

“The reason I am staying is because of the way I have been treated by the club and the fans during the time I have been here.

“I have been looked after very well. I am happy to be here so the new deal was very welcome. I am glad the club and the manager have faith in me and he wants me to stick around.

“For a while a lot of people thought the manager might be going but he has decided to stay and that is only good for me. He brought me here and he has always supported me. We have got a very good relationship and I am sure it will continue.

“It is all about supporting my kids and football allows me to do that. Although Aberdeen is a distance away from Manchester it is only a 50-minute plane ride. So, it has never been an issue.

“I have the view 'If it ain't broke don't fix it'?

“There may have been interest from clubs in England but I am more than happy to stay. I did not give it much thought (moving down south). I am over the moon. The deal was right for me and the club.

“You have to enjoy your football. I have really enjoyed my spell here so long may it continue.

“I get a lot of love off the fans. I think it is because I am a player who gives 110%. I really appreciate their support.

“Who knows if I will finish my career at Aberdeen. I have just signed for another three years. Come back to me in three years’ time and see if my legs are still going!

“How many more years is it for a testimonial?! I would like one of them!

“As long as I keep enjoying my football, that is the main thing.”

Manager Derek McInnes told afc.co.uk “It’s important we retain our good players, the players who give us good service like Shay.

“He has given myself and everyone at the club a lift by showing his commitment to be here at the club.

“The focus has been on player recruitment to replace those who have departed this summer however, it gives me so much satisfaction to see the willingness and desire demonstrated by Shay to remain at AFC.

“It’s clear how much he enjoys it here at Pittodrie and how much affection he has for the supporters. I’m sure the fans would join me in applauding the commitment he has shown.”
