The Dons took Motherwell apart at Fir Park, registering as comprehensive an away win as you could wish for, leaving the Steelmen chasing shadows. It was a complete performance from Stephen Robinson’s team. After Aberdeen’s heroics at Rugby Park just 72 hours previously, Stephen Robinson made three changes to his side, Dan Happe, Mitchy Ntelo and Stuart Armstrong starting from the bench. Into the XI came Toyosi Olusanya, Gavin Molloy and Findlay Marshall, making his first start for the Dons. Motherwell were beaten 1-0 by Rangers at Ibrox ten days ago, and made just one change, Jardell Kanga in for Ibrahim Said. The hosts made a positive start in terms of territory, but for all their possession, the Dons were pretty comfortable in defending against them. It was Aberdeen who were first to come close, Afeez Aremu pouncing on a clearance 25 yards out, chesting it down and hitting it on the volley, the ball swerving just wide of the frame. Lewis Mayo was booked in the 12th minute after Charles-Cook collided with him inside the Motherwell half. Excellent play from Marshall, pressing high up to win possession, saw the ball on to Connor Ronan in the 21st minute. He found Olusanya and his shot was deflected behind. Longelo got off a powerful shot from 15 yards on the half hour, but Marius Muller got his angles right and pushed it behind at the near post with no problem. A long ball forward from Motherwell a minute later had Charles-Cook into the box, but Mats Knoester was always in command of the situation and took the ball off him with ease. The Dons threatened again on 34, neat passing football giving Marshall a chance to try and bend a shot at goal from just inside the area, the ball drifting wide. More good football from Aberdeen a minute later set Kevin Nisbet up to fire off a shot from a central position, fully 30 yards out. It flew like a missile towards goal, but was inches wide with Paulsen grasping thin air. Aberdeen were getting on top and on 38 minutes, they were in front. Chris Cadden’s cross was headed out, but coming onto it 25 yards out was Molloy. He caught it first time and the ball flew through the box and into the bottom corner. It was Molloy’s first Aberdeen goal, and one to remember. The Steelmen were melting now, because 30 seconds later, Sparrow put hands on Nesta Guinness-Walker and pushed him to the ground. A yellow card was the result, the Motherwell man lucky to stay on the pitch. Lowry had a pop for Motherwell on 43, but it was well wide, Muller never troubled. HALF-TIME: MOTHERWELL 0 ABERDEEN 1 Jack Milne replaced Lewis Mayo at the break for Aberdeen. Just 25 seconds into the second half, it was 2-0 to the Dons. Superb football from Marshall on the press won the ball, and he played it on to Nisbet. He rolled it into the path of Ronan and from the edge of the box, his shot took a slight deflection and flashed past Paulsen, his first goal for Aberdeen too. Motherwell went route one in the 50th minute, Paulsen launching the ball 100 yards forward. Muller was quick off his line to beat Maswanhise to it, the pair colliding, the Steelman coming off worse. After treatment, his race was run, Kanga also coming off in place of Said and Houlden. Longelo was late on Olusanya on 54 and got a yellow card as a result. From the free-kick on the right, Olusanya got up and headed powerfully at goal at the back post, the ball hacked clear in the six-yard box. Once again Marshall won the ball high up on 62, he found Nisbet, but his shot was blocked. Motherwell broke from there and Afeez Aremu was booked for pulling his man back midway into the Aberdeen half. From the free-kick, Lowry very nearly put it over the stand behind the goal. Aremu was immediately replaced by Briedl. Motherwell made a double change on 68, replacing Hodge and Charkes-Cook with Levitt and Veigantes. The Dons did likewise four minutes later, Ayoub Mouloua and Stuart Armstrong coming on as Olusanya and Marshall made way after putting in hefty shifts. Lowry clocked off on 75 minutes, Bjorgolfsson on in place. They could have brought the whole bench on and it wouldn’t have mattered, because it was 3-0 seconds later, Mouloua the third Don to get his first goal for the club. A raking pass forward from Ronan got him in on goal and while two Motherwell players converged on him, he twisted and turned into space and hammered a drive into the roof of the net from the edge of the area. Not so much a Panenka, more a sledgehammer. He was booked in the aftermath for taking off his shirt. Dan Happe replaced Knoester in the 78thminute. Icing was duly applied to the cake, along with a cherry and anything else that takes your fancy, as Nisbet made it 4-0 in the 88th minute. A ball over the top from Muller got him on the run. He brushed aside two defenders like they weren’t there, and after advancing into the area, at full stretch, he clipped the ball across the face of goal and in off the post, a lovely finish.
