Stephen Robinson | Rangers Reaction

Stephen Robinson was proud of an Aberdeen side that worked themselves into the ground at Hampden before failing to narrow defeat to Rangers. “Of course we are disappointed with the result. They scored during our best spell of the game, which was unfortunate. But considering it's been a really tough week in terms of injuries, the players showed great character and courage. “We can't put a consistent team out or a consistent shape due to injuries and illnesses at the moment. It's very difficult because half the squad are not available. Any team that does well, there's consistency and patience. We've not been able to put a consistent team, never mind a consistent shape, on the pitches. It’s four changes every week at the moment. “I thought we were really well organised considering we weren't sure what the team would be until this morning. I didn't think Rangers looked like they were going to score, but ultimately, they're a very, very good team. They've got players who can come on and win the game. They spend millions of pounds on those players and there's the difference between the sides today. We just lacked the final bit of quality to get a goal. “I thought we grew into the game. I'm proud of the players. They gave me absolutely everything. They ran themselves into the ground, they were really, really competitive. Of course, we want to win, so we're disappointed in that, but there were some terrific performances out there as well. “I've seen a group of boys giving absolutely everything in the middle of real adversity. Everybody expected us to roll over and be absolutely battered, and that wasn't the case. They've got the character to play for Aberdeen in big games, which I have no doubt they did. But we said to them that's the bare minimum. “Energy, organisation and work ethic. Any team I've been involved in, that is the basis of success. They've shown they can do that. They gave me everything today, so I have no complaints with any of their performances. It needs to be done on a regular basis. There's no leeway when you play for Aberdeen. You don't get two games where nobody's judging you. “But to a man, as I say, I'm proud of them. There were some brilliant performances. Jack Milne, a young boy from Aberdeen who has had one full season. He gets an incredible amount of criticism. He's a lovely boy that wants to learn. He's just learning the game. He's a young defender. You don’t mature until you're 28, 29 as a centre half. I thought he showed real, real character, I thought he was outstanding today, and so was Nicky Devlin. He's not played for months. Shows what a good pro he is. “But we've got two more injuries defensively, so on Monday morning we are sitting down and seeing what we can put together for next weekend. Chris Cadden will be out for six weeks. Mats Knoester is four to six weeks. Lewis Mayo the same. The only plus point is Dan Happe. He was suspended today, we've got one defender coming back. Brad Lyons took a really bad knock at the end, I'm not sure how serious that is, but hopefully he's got away with it.”
