cup double dream ends for Dons

St. Johnstone 2 May (60, 83)

Aberdeen suffered their first cup defeat of the season as St. Johnstone fought back from a goal down to book their place in the cup final. Aberdeen created the first chance when Pawlett won a free kick 25 yards out. Robson’s effort was blocked by the wall, but he fired the rebound inches wide of the goal. The Dons then made the breakthrough in the 14th minute with a well worked goal that saw Pawlett play a perfect ball through to McGinn and he finished well. Rooney should have doubled the lead in the 22nd minute when after a quick break by McGinn he went one-on-one with keeper, but had his effort blocked. Saints immediately broke up the other end and Langfield had to make a very good save to keep the scores level at half time.

In the second half St Johnstone came out strongly, and after Pawlett had wasted another good opportunity on the break, on the hour mark the Saints deservedly drew level. As Aberdeen appealed for a free kick for high feet, Willie Collum let play continue and May turned well and fired beyond Langfield. A minute later Langfield was in action to deny the Perth side a second.

Aberdeen then wasted two more chances, both headers from close range.

Two minutes later Robson had a chance to restore the lead, but headed Flood’s cross straight at the keeper. McGinn then missed a great chance when headed inches wide in the 70th minute, and the Dons were made to pay for those misses when they were undone in the 83rd minute when Stevie May grabbed his second goal of the game after being set up by MacLean. The Dons were unable to create another chance and the dream of a cup double was ended.

This was a sore one. An opportunity missed. Aberdeen were not at their best today but still had the chances to win this game. The Saints were the hungrier side and were more clinical in front of goal therefore they will now play Dundee United in the Scottish Cup Final.
