Red Matchday: Legends Day Special

Joe Prog 1

For this week’s programme, the Red Matchday team have been busy putting together a special edition to celebrate the inaugural AFC Legends Day, which honours the club’s greatest ever goal scorer, ‘The King of the Beach End’, Joe Harper.

Saturday’s programme will have 84 pages packed with interviews, features, Q&As with King Joey, plus some never seen before photos that we have unearthed from the Red Matchday photo archive – the biggest AFC collection around.

Joe was the Dons’ leading scorer in five of his seven seasons here. 1971/72 was the pinnacle of Joe’s goalscoring prowess. Over a season of 47 games, he banged in 42 goals, 33 of them in the league, thus placing himself in the European striking elite. He won a Bronze Boot which sits proudly in a Pittodrie boardroom cabinet. The winner of the Golden Boot was the great Gerd Muller, who registered 40 league goals that season.

Over the course of his Aberdeen career, Joe amassed 125 League goals, 51 in the League Cup, 15 in the Scottish Cup and eight in Europe, making him the Club’s all-time top scorer. In addition, he scored six in the Drybrough Cup which have since been added to his tally of 199, bringing it to 205 goals.

Across two spells with the club, Harper made 300 appearances for Aberdeen. During that time, he helped the Dons to cup successes in 1970 and 1976, while also playing his part in the squad that went on to win the Premier Division title in 1980.

After his record transfer to Everton in December 1972, the Dons went into decline until ‘The King’ returned in March 1976. On his return, he was ineligible to play in the Dons’ closing first team fixtures that season, and on a couple of occasions the attendances for the reserve games that he played in were higher than the first team, such was his popularity.

Also in Red Matchday is the big interview with Mitchel Frame, the Development Don feature with Aaron Cummings and Toyosi Olusanya filling in the Q&A. All this plus columns from the manager Stephen Robinson and captain Graeme Shinnie.
