A Kerry Beattie goal was enough for Aberdeen Women to claim a massive over Partick Thistle in Glasgow on Sunday, much to the delight (and relief!) of manager Scott Booth.

“I think we played fairly well in the first half. There were just basics that we were getting wrong—basic decisions, just being a bit reactive rather than proactive.

“I felt Partick were aggressive for the whole game. Out of possession, we weren’t aggressive enough, and that allowed them to come into it at times. At halftime, we talked about being a bit more aggressive and trying to get rid of those basic errors we were making, but it didn’t really happen. The game became even more transitional in the second half, which doesn’t suit us as a team. We want to control possession and play with that style, but I think the game descended into a transitional game, and I think that suited Partick more than it does us.

“It is really frustrating we weren’t quite at it, because they trained so well this week. The standard of training was excellent. That’s the frustrating thing—because they set that standard in training, you expect that standard in the game. When you get to the end of the game and you’re hanging in there for the three points, that’s frustrating. But, it’s a really important three points, and it’s another win despite not playing at our best.

“I thought Partick were particularly aggressive against us today, which maybe threw us a bit. I don’t think we held the ball up enough up top today. We kept giving the ball away, and that doesn’t allow you to get into your rhythm. Our style is to try and support those strikers, and then you’ve got those up-back-and-through moments, but we just didn’t get to the stage where we were able to do that. That’s where the game became transitional.

“We also just gave the ball away at times needlessly. We didn’t protect the ball well enough. But, again, that could have been down to the aggressive play of Partick, though I still think we can be much, much better.

“It’s frustrating that we now have another break after just coming back from one. No one likes that. We’d like to go away and work this coming week on some aspects of the game we didn’t quite get right and then go into another game and see if we can put it right. But it gives us time to train and prepare for our next game.

“We just want to win as many games as we can. This was a big win because it was against an opponent with the same points as us. It puts us ahead of them, so we’re top of the bottom split, which is all credit to the players. They’ve managed to grind out some wins, but they’ve also managed to win comfortably as well. It’s been a mixed bag, but when it’s a mixed bag and you’re still getting three points, then it can’t be too bad.”
