AFC Women’s team manager, Emma Hunter gave us her reaction to today’s 1-1 draw with Kilmarnock in the first match of the new SWPL2 Campaign for the promoted Dons:
“It was really challenging conditions, we felt last week was a battle against the weather rather than a football match and we were a bit gutted that today was the same. We were just reflecting as a group that it has been really challenging to find our football and get that free-flowing football that we’re used to playing. It becomes really scrappy in that kind of weather and today was no exception, it wasn’t a great advert for women’s football and the wind just dominated the game.
“I felt that neither team created too many chances and it was always looking like it was going to be one of those games. It was hugely disappointing for us that we couldn’t play the type of football that we want to play. I think we’re probably disappointed that we didn’t get all three points but at the same time we just grabbed that point at the very end and that shows the determination and a will to never give up. There was only about seven or eight minutes to go when they took the lead so it showed great determination that the girls kept fighting away and we’re pleased to get a point off the back of that.
“It showed really good team spirit and a bit of resilience as well which is encouraging from a group with so many young players. We had to make a few changes due to injuries and we had a couple missing before the game and that’s going to happen in a physical league like this so the team is going to take knocks and have to rotate and that is the value of having a bigger squad. We’ll reflect on today and move onto next week which will be a whole different game again”.
