They were the fans who braved the North Sea swell and transformed a ferry into a floating Granite City on the way to watch Aberdeen Football Club make history by beating the mighty Real Madrid to win the European Cup Winners’ Cup.

Their journey across the sea on the St. Clair ferry to watch Alex Ferguson’s famous team in action in Gothenburg back in 1983 remains one of the most famous chapters in the history of Scottish football and for the first time the true story of the fans’ trip across the sea and back is set to be told on stage.

Not for profit Aberdeen-based theatre company “Quids In” are trying to raise the funds required to stage the production that celebrate that famous journey that led to Aberdeen’s European Cup Winners’ Cup victory that put the team and the city on the football map.

The story centres round the true story of a group of friends who made the journey along with hundreds of other fans on the St.Clair ferry to and from Gothenburg for that historic football moment.

In their attempts to honour Aberdeen Football Club and its fans, past and present, on stage “Quids In” are hoping their attempts to tell the story of that famous European Cup Winners’ Cup win will be supported by donations from the fans.

The script has been written for free by award winning sportswriter Rob Robertson, who collaborated on The Don, the best-selling biography of Willie Miller. There are many well-known names associated with the club are giving their services for free to try and make sure that the play makes the stage.

If you want to make a financial pledge to help the production of Journey to Gothenburg to be staged at the Aberdeen Arts Centre in March there is a kickstarter page (www. kickstarter.com) to allow you to make your contribution.
