The campaign, which aims to recruit 50 new volunteers within the next 50 weeks, is deemed essential as the Aberdeen scheme is currently at capacity with a number of families on its waiting list. Home visiting volunteers, who receive professional training from the charity, meet with referred families on a weekly basis to offer them emotional and practical support in the home.

Steven Sweeney, Senior Community Coach with Aberdeen FC Community Trust said, “When we heard of Home-Start’s fantastic 50/50 campaign, we were delighted to offer our support in helping launch the Programme today. Home-Start’s staff are rightfully very proud of the excellent work they do in the local community, and we are sure the 50/50 campaign will go from strength to strength. All at AFC and AFC Community Trust wish Home-Start all the best with this fantastic initiative.”

For the past 27 years, Home-Start Aberdeen’s volunteers have offered friendship and practical assistance to families in the city who are dealing with issues of isolation, ill health, disability, depression, domestic violence, substance misuse and other challenges. Families in need of Home-Start Aberdeen’s services are referred to the charity via other agencies including community health professionals, social workers and schools.

“Since its inception 27 years ago, Home-Start Aberdeen has grown beyond recognition,” says Georgette Cobban, scheme manager, Home-Start Aberdeen. “What started life as a small project in the city’s Mastrick area has swelled to become a team of 100 volunteers, who are supported by Home-Start Aberdeen co-ordinators to work with 200 families, including 500 children per year.

“Home-Start Aberdeen has a strong track record of helping vulnerable families to become active and confident members of their communities. From our waiting lists, we know that there are many others who need our help. The 50 in 50 campaign is a concerted effort to recruit the additional volunteers we require to continue to support local families.”

Home-Start Aberdeen is affiliated to Home-Start UK, the UK’s leading family charity. Patron Kirstie Allsop says: “Home-Start is in there, making a difference each and every day. It is changing all our communities for the future. It prevents parents’ difficulties from becoming their children’s problems. The charity supports so many families in so many situations in such an effective and cost effective way. What is there not to like? I would like everyone to give help, get help or be a help through Home-Start – so please volunteer in any way you can.”

Home-Start Aberdeen runs training courses for new volunteers throughout the year. Its next course takes place later this month. For further information about becoming a Home-Start Aberdeen volunteer call 01224 693545 or email [email protected].
