An heroic shift from the Dons, down to ten men for 70 minutes, saw them be the better side throughout extra-time and deservedly win the penalty shootout to reach the Premier Sports Cup semi-final. We even had a Panenka. After the goalless draw with Kilmarnock last weekend, there were two changes for Stephen Robinson’s side with Tony Yogane and Lewis Smith now on the bench. In came Connor Ronan and Mats Knoester in their place. Meanwhile, Kilmarnock named an unchanged team. It was a lively start from Aberdeen, pushing the hosts back deep into their own half. In the fourth minute, it looked like Kevin Nisbet had opened the scoring, a powerful header from Nesta Guinness-Walker’s cross seemingly destined to nestle just inside the post, only for Stryjek to produce a brilliant save at full stretch to his left. Killie retaliated quickly, Hugill chasing a long ball and twice getting the break from a ricochet before drilling a shot across goal and wide from a tight angle. Marius Muller was in action in the 13th minute, diving to his left to push away a low shot across goal from Ring, cutting inside to hit his effort from the corner of the area. Muller was involved again on 23, Kiltie charging forward. His shot from the edge of the area was weak and Muller saved comfortably. Nisbet was the Aberdeen threat again on the half hour, coming onto another Guinness-Walker cross a dozen yards out, but he couldn’t keep his volley down. Dan Happe was in the book on 31, catching Tshibola with a late challenge on halfway. Killie continued to carry the greater menace, a half cleared corner reaching Lowery 20 yards out in the 34th minute. He hit a rasping shot goalwards, but Muller was able to turn it behind. Mitchy Ntelo and Stanger both needed lengthy treatment after there was a clash of heads between the two in the 40th minute. Stanger needed a bandage around a nasty cut just above his left eye, but both players were able to continue. HALF-TIME: KILMARNOCK 0 ABERDEEN 0 Toyosi Olusanya replaced Ntelo for Aberdeen at the break, while Killie introduced John-Jules for Daniels. It was better from the Dons, and they snatched the lead in the 52nd minute. Ronan played a teasing ball from the right to the opposite edge of the Killie six-yard box, which McCarthy completely misjudged. As he missed his header, Nisbet stood his ground and then directed a perfect header back across goal, beyond Stryjek and in. Aremu went in the book for a poor tackle on Kiltie in the 55th minute. Nisbet was testing Stryjek again with another header on 57, but the keeper held it well. From there, he hurled the ball to the halfway line, sending Hugill on his way. He got clear of Lewis Mayo, Happe coming across to cover, but his challenge was late, and a second yellow card was inevitable. It got worse for the Dons from the free-kick, John-Jules getting a flick header on Kiltie’s ball in, guiding the ball into the far corner to level things up. A brilliant defensive header from under his own bar by Knoester in the 62nd minute kept things level, but Killie were clearly looking to seize the moment against the ten men. Alexander Briedl and Gavin Molloy were introduced for Aberdeen in the 64th minute, Aremu and Ronan making way. Tshibola had a look at goal three minutes later, arcing a shot from distance over the bar. With 20 minutes to go, McKenzie came on for the hosts in place of Ring. Guinness-Walker forced a corner on 73 with a fierce drive at the near post that Stryjek pawed behind. Brandon was yellow carded after 75 minutes, hauling down Guinness-Walker as he looked set to spark a dangerous counter-attack. Brandon made way for Meier five minutes later. Clescenco then replaced Kiltie in the 86th minute. A curling ball from John-Jules had Aberdeen hearts in mouth in the 90th minute, but it drifted just wide of the far post, Hugill unable to get a touch on it under pressure from Molloy. A strike from 25 yards from Larsen that Muller saved low down, followed by a shot on the swivel from John-Jules that Muller dealt with easily were the final moments of danger as we headed for extra-time. FULL-TIME: KILMARNOCK 1 ABERDEEN 1 Findlay Marshall came on for Armstrong at the break. Killie had plenty of early possession in the half, but Aberdeen kept a good shape and gave them no real sight of goal. They also threatened, Cadden given a shooting opportunity by a clever lay off from Nisbet, a defender blocking it behind in the 97th minute. O’Hara joined the fray in place of Lowery after 101 minutes. The Dons were almost in front on 103, Marshall intercepting a loose pass on halfway. He drove forward from there and got off a shot from 20 yards that Stryjek stopped but couldn’t gather, the keeper just able to shovel the ball away as Olusanya bore down on him. EXTRA-TIME HALF-TIME: KILMARNOCK 1 ABERDEEN 1 With Nisbet suffering from cramp, Ayoub Mouloua was readied to replace him in the 110th minute. A minute later, Knoester was inches away from grabbing a goal, strong enough to shrug off two wrestling holds and get his head to a corner, the ball dropped agonisingly wide of the back post. Cadden was next to go down with cramp, and his race was run too, Jack Milne replacing him in the 115th minute. Aberdeen were on the break seconds later, Olusanya galloping 80 yards forward before chopping back inside and firing off a shot that Stryjek did well to claw away. From the throw in, Aberdeen caused more consternation, Milne flicking it on, Marshall in at the back post but not quite able to get his effort on target. This was a huge shift from the Dons, deserving of finding the winner. How the Killie goal survived in the 118th minute is anybody’s guess. A goalmouth stramash saw Milne have two shots blocked in the six-yard box, Guinness-Walker then had a crack from a rebound only to be denied by Stryjek, who then also blocked Olusanya’s follow up at the near post. The Dons were away on the break again in the final minute only for Olusanya to be rugby tackled by McCarthy in the centre circle, the Killie man getting booked. The ten men had been by far the better side in extra-time, but on we went to penalties. EXTRA-TIME FULL-TIME: KILMARNOCK 1 ABERDEEN 1 1-0 Hugill buried his penalty beyond Muller away to his right. 1-0 Guinness-Walker’s low penalty was saved by Stryjek to his left. 1-0 John-Jules took a stuttering run up, but didn’t faze Muller, who saved to his right. 1-1 Briedl sent Stryjek the wrong way and buried it in the bottom corner. 1-1 O’Hara went with a stuttering run too, same result, Muller saving to his left. 1-2 Mouloua, an outrageous Panenka. Pick that out. 1-2 Tshibola. Stuttered. Muller didn’t. Save to his right. 1-3 Milne, lashes his effort into the roof of the net, the Dons are back at Hampden!
