The Spartans 1 Aberdeen Women 1 SWPL1 | The Vanloq Community Stadium Wednesday 30 April | 7:45pm.
Aberdeen were held to a 1-1 draw by The Spartans in Edinburgh. Having scored in the first half through Hannah Stewart, the Dons were pegged back in the second half and forced to settle for a point at Ainslie Park.
The Dons took the first chance of the game after nearly 20 minutes. Though much of the play before that had been in the Dons’ half, The Spartans had not created a chance of note, and when a deflection took the ball straight into the path of Hannah Stewart six yards out, Thomson did well to save the initial effort. But it fell straight back to the feet of Stewart, who made no mistake with the second effort, burying it in the roof of the net.
The next chance fell to Eva Thomson just shy of half an hour in as she volleyed first time on the edge of the box with her left foot, but she dragged it wide of the far post.
Emma Ilijoski was causing trouble down the left, and in the 35th minute she linked well with Fran Ogilvie, who put in a danger cross that was headed narrowly over by Kerry Beattie.
The Spartans got their first shot away in the 39th minute as the Thomson’s half-clearance fell to Anderson, but it flew harmlessly over the bar.
Rennie was next to try her luck for the hosts seconds before half time, her low drive always going wide from just outside the box.
Half time: The Spartans 0-1 Aberdeen
The Spartans started the second half the brighter, and in the 53rd minute a long throw in from Clelland on the left eventually found Chomczuk on the edge of the box, who hit a half valley low and just wide of the far post.
Aberdeen had an excellent chance to make it two as Toni-Leigh Finnegan’s shot was saved and looked to fall to Emily Kraft with an open goal, but Spartans recovered to force a corner.
And the Dons rued the missed chance just a minute later as Spartans countered from the corner and equalised. Bates broke down the left and found Rennie in the middle, who’s shot was touched but Annalisa McCann but still found its way into the corner.
In added time Spartans worked their way into the box, and Jess Broadrick was well positioned to block a cutback from the byline out for a corner. The set piece came to the back post, but was headed just wide and Aberdeen took a point back up north.
