“The first half performance was excellent, Dundee changed their shape to come up here and we had to try and work round that shape. We missed a few chances, I think we had ten corners in the first half and went close with a few of them and it was constant pressure. While it’s still 0-0 the away team is always going to have a chance especially with the players they have so you are never totally comfortable.

“We didn’t start the second half well enough and we gave them a bit of encouragement but out with that 15 minute period we were totally dominant.

“The players had to show patience and confidence and maturity to make sure that they kept doing things the right way. Hayes popped up on the right hand side and beats their wing back and puts in a real quality cross and Adam does brilliantly with his header. Once we got that goal it was all about trying to get the next one on the counter attack and I think the second goal probably made it a fairer reflection overall.

“Adam is like any centre forward, they want goals. They are happy to be part of a winning team at times but centre forwards need their goals. His header was brilliant and when he is standing over a penalty you have so much confidence in him. He is a confident boy and he always backs himself and if he gets the right service he will score goals.

“There has been good players not starting games but that is the nature of the squad that we have got. Against all three teams in Europe all three centre backs defended deep home and away and there is a different way of playing at times in European football. Up front it was probably more of a link player that we needed and Goodwillie did that well and the two of them fed off each other well today. We tried to pair Rooney and Goodwillie together today to cause them problems and they both played their part in getting the win.

“I am more confident in utilising the squad this season and I think we looked so strong today, physically we were strong with loads of running even towards the end. We need to make sure that we are not overcooking some and give others the chance to play and keep them interested. Four wins in a row is a good solid start from us and it’s important to get that consistency as early in the season as possible.”
