“We played the game far more aggressively and we asked questions of them in the second half. I thought Inverness had it too comfortable in the first half, I thought we played in front of them and we weren’t playing with enough quality in possession of the ball.
“I thought we played into their hands a little bit by being too ponderous in possession. We needed to move them about a bit and I thought at the start of the second half we did exactly that.
“I think the players deserve a lot of credit for recognising that, we spoke to them at half time about what we are looking to try and do and I thought we deservedly got ourselves in front, it was a great goal from Niall.
“We passed up a couple of opportunities, in particular with Wes Burns when he brought real pace to the game. We got them turning and moving and I thought they were struggling to keep us at bay. I thought the second goal was coming.
“But Inverness, there were signs two weeks ago in the game against St Johnstone, they are starting to become more like themselves and the game is never over against them.
“That’s why we are kicking ourselves because we had two or three opportunities to clear the ball before it lands at the feet of Vigurs. We’ve been the victims of some brilliant finishes recently. His finish is top drawer.
“You could say the quality of his finish makes them deserve a point, but we had the opportunity to clear it and we never dealt with it. Nine times out of ten he’ll hit the target with that because he’s very good on his left side.
“I thought at one each we still had chances. Rooney’s had a header, Stockley’s had a chance but it was a good clearance off the line and I think Considine’s had a chance right at the end.
“At that stage, at one each, the game was far too stretched for my liking. We weren’t convincing enough with our work at 1-1.
“When Wes Burns brings pace to the game he looks like a player who should be playing at a higher level and in a higher league. He absolutely left them for dead when he created his chance. I thought he should have taken the shot on, at that speed it is difficult to look up, but he has to hit the target.
“It that had gone in you would not have seen many better goals than that. But it goes wide and the game finishes 1-1.
“It is difficult to grumble too much about the result. A point a piece was fair because we were not good enough in the first half by our standards. We never moved the ball well enough and it is two points dropped by us. It is the second home game we have dropped points after the earlier draw against Hearts. That is why we have had a slower start than normal. That is why we still have to find our rhythm. We have to make sure we are better next time out, especially at Pittodrie.
“Graeme Shinnie got a kick on the foot. We think it was on the nerve and he could not feel anything in his left foot. He tried to stay on but the feeling never came back. We think it settle down in a few days hopefully.
“James Maddison played the game exactly like how he trained all week. He slides off the back of people. His touch is instant. He is a lovely technician of the game. He finds space even in the tightest of games. He has got quality. He has got confidence. He was very unlucky with his shot which forced a good save. He has nice balance and a good left foot and a good right foot. “We have to try and find the right place and position for him in the team in the right games in the right areas of the pitch.
“He has the ability to unlock defences. He has a calmness about him. All good players have that.
“He can be pleased with his debut as he only just arrived this week.
“As a team we can be pleased with our work up until they scored. To win a game at home there has to be a better 90-minute performance from us. There is still a lot of room for improvement within us.
“It is still early in the season. We cannot get caught up with what other teams are doing. It is still only one game we have lost. But we are used to winning matches. The performances have not been there to turn these draws into wins and that is the challenge for us.
“We have some good fixtures coming up and plenty to look forward to. It is not all doom and gloom yet. We know we are better than what we showed today, especially in the first half. The players are honest enough and if we all stick together we will re-find the form we have shown over the past three seasons.”
