Dons Chairman overwhelmed by level of interest
“It does give us an opportunity to harness that level of following on a more regular basis although at this moment, while we are confident ahead of what will be a very hard game, we have achieved nothing yet.”
And the Dons supremo sympathises with those fans who have been unable to secure a brief for Sunday’s big occasion. “Naturally, in an ideal world we would want every single fan who wanted to attend to be there but despite ourselves and Inverness Caley Thistle enjoying a good relationship at all levels, the sad fact is that segregation is part and parcel of the modern game and I can completely appreciate why the authorities would not permit Aberdeen supporters to be housed above Caley fans.
“It’s just fantastic that we’re looking at an all-north final and it’s perhaps indicative of a shift in the landscape of Scottish football, particularly if you also look at the surviving sides in the Scottish Cup too. Naturally, after going through some very difficult times in recent years, both on and off the field, the onus is now on the Club to produce the goods on a sustained basis and in the current management team, we feel we have the people in place to give us a very good chance of doing just that.
“Sunday will be a big occasion, not just for me, but for everyone connected with AFC, and irrespective of the outcome, is sure to be one that lives long in the memories of all who are lucky enough to be there.”
The Chairman has acknowledged the role played by Aberdeen Asset Management in the recent upturn in the Club’s fortunes, despite the company relinquishing their shareholding and seats on the Board in the organisation last year.
“AAM has been a great friend of this Club for many years, not just with substantial financial support through some pretty tough times but also through their continuing commitment to assist the Club in a number of strategic areas. Given that we’re on the cusp of our first cup final in fourteen years, I feel it is an appropriate occasion to recognise the prominent role Martin Gilbert, Hugh Little and the team at AAM has performed behind the scenes in sometimes very challenging circumstances, a role that has been very much appreciated.
“Finally, with the big day almost upon us, I would like to add my personal thanks and appreciation to the fans, not only for their tremendous show of support for Sunday, but also their fantastic backing, home and away during the season, and their loyalty over the difficult years we have endured.”
