Aberdeen Women had the chance to pick up their second league victory in a row as they faced off against Dundee United at Pittodrie on Friday night.
The visitors were looking to end their seven league match losing run while the Dons hoped to build upon their resounding 4-1 Scottish Gas Scottish Cup Quarter Final victory against St Johnstone.
Aberdeen only made three changes with Jessica Broadrick, Ellie May Cowie, Kerry Beattie coming into the squad.
Dundee United looked to take an early lead with a handful of dangerous chances but the Dons regrouped and started to pile pressure on the visitors.
The Dons took the lead in the second half thanks to a beautiful cross finding the head of Francesca Ogilvie just before the hour mark.
Aberdeen secured the three points twenty minutes later when Ogilvie crossed the ball into the path of a diving Hannah Stewart and gifting the Dons with a victory under the lights of Pittodrie.
Report:
The game kicked off with the visitors showing early signs of threatening the Dons’ backline with United’s Anna Dickov having back to back chances in the opening minutes. Maya Knight’s freekick found Dickov in open space before the referee brought play to a stop due to the striker being offside.
It only took Dickov another two minutes to be in a dangerous position as she shoots from inside the box thanks to a Katie Frew pass but it meets the safe hands of Dons keeper Annalisa McCann.
Aberdeen started to find their rhythm as the half progressed with Emma Ilijoski making numerous threatening runs down the left wing. In the 19th Minute, Ilijoski crossed the ball to captain Hannah Stewart. Hannah, being swarmed by the Dundee United backline, took her shot and it ended up being swept up by United’s Beth Rennie.
Aberdeen did well to keep the pressure on the visiting defence with Ilijoski once again completing a cross into the box but this time it was Francesca Ogilvie in the middle to take a chance. The ball clipped her knee and she was unable to capitalise on the moment.
As the break crept closer Aberdeen had another opportunity to take the lead through Hannah Stewart who linked up with Ellie May Cowie but the latter could not find Ogilvie who was waiting in the middle.
Moments before the whistle, Cowie had another great chance to separate the sides as her shot from the edge of the box forced a diving Beth Rennie to palm the ball out wide.
HT Score: Aberdeen Women 0-0 Dundee United Women
The Dons went into the second half guns blazing and almost got the opener three minutes in after Ogilvie and Eva Thomson have chances from the edge of the box that are blocked and put out of danger.
Ogilvie had another chance to put Aberdeen ahead when she blasted a long range curling effort into the path of Beth Rennie who had to palm it out for a corner. The Dons did not have to wait long for their long awaited goal as in the 56th minute Jessica Broadwick picked the ball up at the right corner of the box and fired a delightful cross into the path of Ogilvie who placed a well taken header into the bottom left corner.
Aberdeen did not look like they wanted to stop there as Ellie May Cowie made a great run down the right to swing a cross towards Ilijowski who gets her laces on it and sends it over the bar on the hour mark.
There was another flurry of chances as we approached the 70th minute with Kerry Beattie chancing her luck from range but was unlucky to see it sail over the crossbar.
As the game neared its climax, Francesca Ogilvie went from scorer to provider as she sent the ball over the heads of the Dundee United backline and was found by Hannah Stewart who doubled the Dons’ lead with a diving header and ensured that Aberdeen would be walking away with the three points.
