AFC COMMUNITY TRUST DELIVERS 'DEMENTIA FRIENDLY' FOOTBALL AT PITTODRIE

This Saturday AFC Community Trust is delighted to announce that participants from our Dementia Friendly Communities (DFC) activities have been given a chance to watch Aberdeen’s match against Kilmarnock in style. Thanks to the generosity of Intermoor, some of our DFC participants will be able to roar on the reds from the comfort of one of the boxes in the Main Stand. This fantastic gesture has been matched to provide a second Main Stand box for use by Alzheimer Scotland, who will host another dementia group at the same game.

Long-time community sponsors Apache, have teamed up with Aberdeen Football Club and the club’s catering partner Sodexo, to provide this additional opportunity.   When asked about what this opportunity would provide for the participants, Dean McBain, Community Projects Officer said, “Its great to have the opportunity to invite our programme participants along to the match in an environment that they feel is friendly and safe.   “We are doing a lot of work with people & families living with dementia and this is just another great chance to involve the wider community with AFC/AFCCT. Some of the group who are attending the game have not been to one since being diagnosed but this will hopefully give them the confidence to go to a match and cheer on our team.   “Many thanks to Intermoor, Apache, AFC and Sodexo for making this possible, it is greatly appreciated by all involved.”

Many of those attending have taken part in Dementia Friendly Wellbeing Sessions, a City-Wide approach designed to help people living with Dementia to access physical activity across Aberdeen. All of these sessions are facilitated by AFCCT staff members who have completed ‘Dementia Friends’ Information sessions provided by Alzheimer Scotland.   Each partner is committed to integrating people living with Dementia, their families and carers into existing services. By working collaboratively AFCCT hopes to increase opportunities for as many people as possible in the community, offer support to those people, and to make Aberdeen a Dementia Friendly City.   To find out more about the programme click here
