Jim Goodwin | Rangers Reaction

After getting the game’s first goal, Jim Goodwin was realistic about a tough afternoon at Ibrox for the Dons.

“I’m extremely disappointed with how the game panned out. We started okay, the game settled and we came into it, and then scored a good goal from our point of view. That’s what we spoke about all week, trying to be positive and getting that first goal.

“The crowd were getting a wee bit anxious, you could feel that in the stadium, but in fairness to Rangers, they reacted well and scored a good equaliser from their perspective, though we were disappointed with our shape for the goal. It was a straightforward pass through the middle of the back line, we didn’t match the midfield run and that disrupts everything – Anthony needs to come over, and that leaves Colak free and if there’s one man you don’t want getting the ball there, it’s him.

“The last few minutes of the first half we needed to be sensible, get in at 1-1, but we got done on half-time. We didn’t deal with the free-kick, Kelle Roos made a great save to his left, but their players reacted quicker than we did.

“We were still positive at half-time and we started the half well and we had a great chance with Duk’s header that went just over. That goes in, it’s game on again, but from that moment on, Rangers dominated. We found it very hard to put three or four passes together, we were very sloppy in possession, and it was wave after wave of attack which was very disappointing.

“In a fixture like this, you’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t. You can see from our team selection we tried to be positive, we had two strikers up top, so it was a bit adventurous. We felt they would be slightly fatigued after their trip in midweek and the travelling, so we thought long and hard about trying to be attacking.

“When we came here last season just after I joined and with that group of players, I felt the best approach was to be negative. We lost 1-0 and everybody’s giving you a pat on the back, but we didn’t offer anything to the game.

“Today we tried to be brave, we got in front, we wanted to try to cause them problems, which Duk did at times, but in the end, it didn’t work and I deserve the criticism that comes my way for that. Ultimately though, they were far better than us in the second half and sometimes, you just have to hold your hands up to that.”
