There's lots of positives

The Manager Post Match Queen's Park

Stephen Robinson marked Aberdeen’s report card as ‘a good start but must do better’ as they completed a 2-1 win over Queen’s Park at Pittodrie. “There's lots and lots of positives, a lot of great performances from a lot of the new players, and the first half was excellent. But if you stop doing the simple things well after 45 minutes, if you start taking things for granted, then you make the game hard for yourself. We stopped playing the right way for 20, 30 minutes and it makes life difficult. “Set plays are absolutely vital at both ends. The early goal gave us a cushion in the game. And then conceding from one makes the game nervy, because we didn't do our job properly on the other end. It's something I'm drilling into people. They have to step up or they don't play - simple. They have to be trusted to mark from set plays, it's so, so important that they do that. We'll continue to try and improve at that.” In the end, Aberdeen were grateful for a save at the death from debutant Marius Muller, which secured all three points. “We should be out of sight in the game and we shouldn't have to rely on Marius. But we did, and that's why you have good players on the team. Marius showed what a fantastic goalkeeper he is. We were hoping he didn't have to show that today, but he did. That's what we've brought him in for. It was a fantastic save at the end. We shouldn't need that. We should score at the other end and they break. The game should be out of sight with the two ones that go across the line. “I threw Marius straight in, like I've done with Lewis, like I've done with Nesta. They haven't had a pre-season, so the only way to get them fit is playing games. We know they're not 100% up to speed. We know that, at best, we're getting 60 minutes from them, but it's important that we give them game time. You have to win the games as well as trying to get people fit, it's something you have to endure in this competition. But ultimately, we won the game. “Lewis isn’t fit enough yet. He's a long way to go to the last 90 minutes. But you can see his quality, you can see Tony's quality. Both will get fitter. Both will get better. Both will get stronger, as will the whole squad. “Everybody here is fighting for a place. I don't guarantee anybody that they will play. I don't sign people and tell them they're guaranteed to play. Those choices are mine. I believe we've signed good players. We need to get 90 minutes out of those players. We're not getting that yet, for the reasons I've just explained, but I'm confident that will come. “Other players are further on in terms of fitness, and it shows. I thought Connor was superb today. His deliveries, his quality on the ball, sometimes he's three and four steps ahead of people. He gets up and supports Kevin as well, so Kevin's not left isolated. “There's still areas I feel we need to improve on. I still think that we're in light in certain areas, and there's people that still need to move. So, we're not finished in terms of the squad, but we're getting there.”
