Scott Booth shared his thoughts at full-time after Aberdeen Women lost 2-0 to Glasgow City in the Sky Sports Cup.
“I think we were disciplined and organised, but I think the second half we got a little bit stretched at certain points.
“My overriding thought is that we just need to keep the ball better. It’s hard to build attacks when you’re constantly giving the ball away.
“We reorganised to win the ball back, which we did, but then immediately gave it away again. We were poor in possession. We didn’t really get anything going.
“We didn’t hold the ball well enough to allow the rest of the team to support or start attacks. We kept giving the ball away, which meant we spent most of the game without possession.
“When you do that against a team like City they’re going to create chances. It’s frustrating because we’re much better than that in possession. Out of possession we were fine, but both goals we lost came from giving the ball away.
“They took their first one really well. The second one came from a corner — we didn’t track our runner. It’s such a cheap goal to give away.
“It was almost a carbon copy of last week against them from a free kick — same run, same player, and we didn’t pick her up. If you don’t deal with that, you’ll get punished.
“Overall, I’ve got to be happy with the structure and discipline. We were better than last week. It was more consistent, last week it was just spells, this time it was most of the game.
“You don’t get many chances, so when you do, from corners or set plays, you’ve got to make them count. Today we were well off it in possession, but out of possession we were good. The players understand that we have to be better with the ball.
“We’ve got two games coming up where we’ll have much more possession, so we need to be dangerous in those moments.
“There’s no disgrace losing 2-0 here, but if you don’t do your jobs and stay organised, the score line can run away from you. We were good against them last week but still lost heavily. It wasn’t really a 5–0 game, but the result still looks bad.
“We went one better today, but I still think we could’ve been much more dangerous in possession.
“Both goalkeepers have been great. Anna has been unlucky because she started pre-season well, but Kate came in and took her chance.
“Kate’s been commanding, and that means Anna just has to stay patient, keep pushing, and take her opportunity when it comes. It’s good to have two really strong goalkeepers, we’re lucky that way.
“We’ve got some big games coming up, back here again next week.
“We will certainly know the pitch!
“I’d like us to have more of the ball next game and play much better than we did last time against Partick. That shouldn’t be too difficult. If we can be as disciplined and organised as we were today, but also more effective with the ball, that’s the plan.”
