“I am over the moon. I am absolutely delighted. It has been ongoing for a long period of time but that was because I just wanted to concentrate on my football. Now my season has finished I could finally sit down and get the deal done.
“All the speculation about me potentially leaving was for everyone else to talk about. For me and my family, I knew I was going to concentrate on my football and then at the end of the season make a decision.
“The manager made it very clear to me that he wanted me to stay and he spoke to me during the season. We both agreed that we would wait until the end of the season so I could concentrate on my football. The end of the campaign came for me, we spoke again and we managed to get it sorted and I am delighted.
“There are a lot of reasons why I signed.
“For me personally playing European football again is a big thing. I really enjoyed playing in Europe this season. The chance to keep doing well with a successful team is a big factor. Also to play under a manager who wants to do his best for the team and the club. Next season I really believe we can kick on and make it a special one.
“I feel we are at the start of something. It is important we recognise that. We are just at the start under this manager and there is still a lot more to come from us as a team. Hopefully we can keep progressing year on year.
“The club is on an up so I don’t see why I should leave at this moment. We are all looking forward to coming back for pre-season and it is important we hit the ground running.
“For myself it has been a long season. It has almost been eleven months full on playing football every week but I have enjoyed every minute of this season and I hope it will be the same next season as well.
“I know that I am still learning the game. Hopefully I can continue to improve. I know the manager will demand that of me. I know that there is still a lot I can learn. I can improve technically and gain more experience.
“Although I am not playing on Sunday I will still be here to pay tribute to one of our greatest ever players. I hope the fans turn out to give him the send-off that he deserves. It will be tough for Russell and his family to say goodbye.
“He has been a big influence in the dressing room. You can go and speak to him about any problems you have and he will go and sort them out or give you advice. He has been a very good captain and has always been there for the players. He will be missed in the changing room but I we all wish him well in his new job.”
