Third place for Dons after late controversy | The Manager, Willo and Barry Post Match on RedTV
Aberdeen 0 |
Motherwell 1 | Reid 90+1
SPFL Premiership | Pittodrie | 12.15pm | FT
Aberdeen’s quest to finish in second place in the league finished in heart-ache this afternoon as Motherwell stole all 3 points in with virtually the last kick of the ball. The game had been a drab affair with few chances for either side but Aberdeen had dominated possession against a Motherwell side who were strong defensively but quite happy to sit in.
With about ten minutes to go Peter Pawlett was clean through on goal but was flagged offside – he was well onside. Then with the very last touch of the ball the visitors made the breakthrough when a long free kick into the box. As Jamie Langfield went to claim it he was clearly taken out by John Sutton who made no attempt to go for the ball but the officials allowed play to continue. After the ball hit the bar there was a goalmouth scramble and Reid bundled the ball over the line.
A horrible way to end what has been a very good season.
One footnote to the match today. Aberdeen skipper Russell Anderson made his 400th appearance for the Dons. A fantastic achievement.
