“Normally it would be a very good fixture, the local derby, but it’s now even more important because there could be something at stake. If Kenny Shields team does its job with a home victory it won’t matter but it will matter for us from a point of view of pride and eventual league position so it’s a good end to the season. It’s not as good as we would have hoped but it’s favourable.

“We’ve got to try and get a victory. We have to go and challenge them to defend because we’re very good when we attack and United will know that. They have some very talented players. The young guy Gauld and of course Mackay Stevens are very talented.

“It would perhaps be a fairytale were we to win and Dundee beat Kilmarnock but it’s not out with the bounds of possibility. I thought at one point there with the fixtures in front of me there was a possibility that Kilmarnock could end up with two draws but I think a home fixture is in their favour. What we have to do is make sure that Aberdeen are the team there if they slip up.

“I would be very pleased to leave Derek with a team in the top six. I would be disappointed if we leave him below that. Whatever happens I think this has been work in progress. From where we are and with the injuries and the decisions we’ve had to endure I think any independent observer would say Aberdeen have been desperately unfortunate.

“I think it is unwise to think about the other game taking place. Concentrate on what we’re doing. There’s no doubt what we’ve got to do at Tannadice, we’ve got to try and win the game so it doesn’t matter what the other score is as far as I’m concerned so I don’t want to know it. I just want to play and at the end we’ll know where we stand.

“My major regret during my time at the Club is that in the Scottish Cup Semi Final last year we were beaten and I feel quite disappointed for the Aberdeen fans but also a bit angry about decisions made in the game. You can’t live in the past, you’ve got take it on the chin because I’ve had many pleasurable times to compensate for these disappointing times.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the fans for the support they have given myself and Archie. The response we have had has been terrific from the fans in the stand. The support we also have had from all the staff in the club has been great and we have had a great response from all the players. I want to personally thank everyone.

“The best thing we can do is finish with a win at Dundee United.”
