Pawlett’s late strike wins it for the Dons
Dundee United 1 (Souttar 50)
Aberdeen 2 (Robson pen 63, Pawlett 90)
SPFL Premiership | Tannadice | 1st January 2014 | Kick off 3pm
Aberdeen started 2014 with a great victory over Dundee United at Tannadice. The winner from Peter Pawlett came in the final minute but this was a game the Dons deserved to win after a very solid and impressive performance.
In an open and end-to-end first half, played in very wet and blustery conditions, the Dons had more of the possession and looked the more composed but couldn’t find a breakthrough. Pawlett had the best chance for the Dons but the in-form midfielder could not get the better of Cierzniak in the United goal. That was a story that repeated itself throughout the match, the United keeper produced some very good saves.
The Dons started the 2nd half strongly but again Cierzniak made a good save from Pawlett. Then from a corner United took the lead. The Dons defence failed to deal with the cross and Souttar was on hand to tap in. The Dons did not panic and got back on level terms on the 64th minute when Barry Robson equalised from the penalty spot. A long ball forward by Robson, aimed at Josh Maggennis, was handled by Andy Robertson and referee Willie Collum pointed to the spot. Robson stepped up and made no mistake with a thundering spot kick. Aberdeen finished the game strongly but Cierzniak in the United goal kept out efforts from Pawlett and McGinn. Just as the game looked to be heading for a draw, Pawlett stepped up to win it for the Dons. After the very impressive Willo Flood was fouled, Barry Robson’s wicked free kick wasn’t dealt with by Cierzniak and Pawlett was on hand to bundle the ball home in the 90th minute, sending the Red Army home very happy.
