Match summary:
Ryan Jack made a surprise return to the starting XI and capped his comeback by scoring the winning goal with just seven minutes played. The midfielder picked the ball up on the edge of the box from Pawlett and drilled a low shot into the back of the net. The Dons continued to produce some fine play but were lucky not to concede an equaliser when O’Halloran sent an effort wide of the post when it looked like he would score. The Dons had other chances, Rooney and Hayes both forcing Mannus into saves but they led by a single goal to nil at half time.
After the break there were few chances for either side in a largely dull 45 minutes. Saints did have the better of the chances there were including an O’Halloran effort which smashed off the inside of the upright but luckily for The Dons it bounced the right side of the line and away to safety. The visitors were reduced to 10 men when Steven Maclean was sent off for a second bookable offence with a minute left of normal time and The Dons held on comfortably in injury time to pick up another 3 points. Today was also Jamie Langfield’s 100th clean sheet for the club and 18th this season.
Attention now turns to two big cup games starting with the visit of Dumbarton next Saturday in the Scottish Cup.
After Tuesday’s excellent victory over the league leaders, Aberdeen faced St Johnstone as they looked to further consolidate 2nd place ahead of two big cup games in the next few weeks. The Dons made 1 change- Ryan Jack returned from injury and went straight into the starting XI. He replaced Barry Robson who dropped to the bench. The full line up was:
Aberdeen team | Langfield, Logan, Tate, Reynolds, Considine, Flood, Pawlett (Low 77′), Hayes, McGinn (Smith 62′), Rooney, Jack (Robson 62′)
Substitutes not used | Weaver, Anderson, Shaughnessy, Vernon
