Dons hit by a counterpunch in Boxing Day defeat
Aberdeen 0 |
Motherwell 1 | Ainsworth 48′
SPFL Premiership | Pittodrie | 26th Dec 2013 | Kick off 3pm | Att: 12,494 | FT
A frustrating Boxing Day clash as Motherwell claimed the three points at Pittodrie this afternoon despite the Dons dominating the possession throughout.
Aberdeen started the game extremely strongly and when well on top Jonny Hayes should have done better with a header which he sent wide of the post on 14 minutes before Niall McGinn sent a free kick just wide on 35 minutes. As the half went on Motherwell came into it a bit more although Langfield was rarely called into action in the first period but for a save from a long range effort by Paul Lawson.
Motherwell made the perfect start to the second half when they broke from an Aberdeen attack and got a lucky break. Anier then raced into the box before cutting the ball back for Ainsworth to slot home on 48 minutes. The rest of the game was a frustrating affair for the Dons as they continued to have most of the possession but didn’t create too many clear cut chances. Pawlett and Robson both had strong penalty shouts waved away before Shaughnessy was unlucky with an effort from the edge of the box which hit the post. McGinn saw a low shot saved by the impressive Dan Twardzik and sent a curling free kick past the post in injury time but it wasn’t to be and it was the visitors who claimed all three points.
