What is in this week’s action packed RedMatchday Scottish Cup Special
There is another brilliant retro cover from Dolly Digital. All the Scottish Cup programmes this season have included a programme cover from the past and this week’s front page was selected by the Red Army. It is from the Aberdeen v Kilmarnock Scottish Cup tie on the 1st March 1969. As as well using the cover design there is a feature on what was in the programme that day:
“A hard encounter can be anticipated this afternoon when we welcome Kilmarnock, who, after a slow start in the League Cup, have gradually climbed the league table to a position immediately behind Celtic.
“Walter McCrae, ex-trainer for Scotland, who manages Kilmarnock, has worked hard since his short spell with the club to bring success to the Ayrshire side both on the field and by his efforts to swell the turnstile receipts. His approach to and talks with the football public has proved to be most encouraging to date.
“Artic conditions have taken toll of League fixtures and we do not know what our commitments are in the future, but this we do know that we are due to play Arbroath next Saturday at Gayfield and considering the very short journey, it would be the ideal place to visit and give vocal support”.
There are featured interviews with Anthony O’Connor
“I have loved my time at Aberdeen. I left Burton when they got promoted to the Championship and I had another year left there. I probably could have stayed with them and picked up half decent money as they were in the Championship, but it was not for me. I wanted to leave and come to a club where I was 100% wanted and to be fair the gaffer has shown great faith in me.
“I knew when I came up that it was not going to be easy to jump into the team. Thankfully, I got an early chance and have not looked back since. You have spells when you probably think you are not at your best and you have dips in form. But overall I cannot speak highly enough of my time here. I cannot speak highly enough of the coaching staff and the staff around the football club. They were so welcoming when I first came up”.
and Niall McGinn
“Goals are great but for me it is important to get assists too because you are helping the team. It never goes unnoticed by the manager or Tony Docherty, nor by your team mates.
“Probably it is only the last few years that the wider world has taken so much notice of assists, with players like Kevin De Bruyne creating awareness of how important they are to the team. Thierry Henry said recently that he got more satisfaction from providing goals than scoring as he believes it is the hardest part of the game.
“Saying that, I will be honest and say that I would like to get to 100 goals for the club. I think getting 100 goals being a wide player would be a great achievement for myself.”
Plus columns from Derek McInnes and Graeme Shinnie.
There is also an in-depth interview with the Scotland Women’s captain and big Dons fan Rachel Corsie.
Rachel is the great-granddaughter of Donald Colman.
Colman, of course, was a highly influential figure here before World War Two.
“I do know a bit about him because I did a school talk on him when I was eight! He was my chosen subject. It was a long time ago that he was involved with the club but I am proud of the connection. He was on my mum’s side of the family.
“My Grandma still speaks a lot about my Great Grandfather and the things he would do. I quite often come home and say things and she can correlate that with a lot of things he would say to her, which is quite impressive.
“More recently, I have learned just how important a figure he was in the club’s history. He was not just an ex-Aberdeen player. He was the trainer, he was the coach, and he built the dugout.”
In the extensive history section we look back at all the previous Scottish Cup matches between the two sides. There is also a feature on arguably the greatest ever player who played at Pittodrie, way back in 1952. Plus, opinions pieces from Richard Gordon and Chris Crighton and much more.
