“I want to apologise to the fans for the major disappointment of the cup exit. I did not think we deserved it but the fact of the matter is we did not score and they did and we are out.

“I want to thank the support as usual for their usual fantastic backing. I want to say to them that in my opinion the players did everything possible to try and get a result for them.

“I complement the players on their determination. No one laid down when we were behind and everyone fought to the bitter end. The players were desperate to please the fans and I think in terms of effort and application they did but sadly we lost the game.

“We did not take the chances we had and for the second successive week we missed a penalty. Williams made some great saves and credit to him but we had more than enough chances not only to get a replay but I felt we did enough to win the game. If we had scored these two penalty kicks we would still be in the cup and be up to forth in the league.

“I was right behind the goal we conceded and I thought the shot was going over the bar so I was surprised it ended it in the net.

“We have to lift ourselves as we have two important home league games coming up. We have to get amongst the points again to get ourselves back up the table.”
