Painful ending at Links Park for AFC Women

montrose action

Montrose 2 Aberdeen Women 1 Sunday 5 April 2026 Scottish Power Women's Premier League Links Park A late, late Montrose comeback meant Aberdeen Women fell to a dramatic defeat at Links Park on Sunday afternoon, their fears of ending up in the relegation play-off place worsened with just three games of the regular season to go. Maddie Finnie headed The Dons into the lead after three minutes, her goal in vain on a mightily painful afternoon in Angus. Scott Booth made three changes to his side that won in Lanarkshire a fortnight ago, starting with Katie Cox who returned in goals. Off the back of grabbing two assists as a second half substitute in Hamilton, Eva Thomson returned in midfield. Hannah Stewart was also introduced to lead the line, the forward resuming the armband. Anna Prawer and Erin Carrol were named amongst the substitutes, Kerry Beattie not involved at all. 16-year-old Mia Selbie retained her place on the right of the front three after a successful full debut before the break. Montrose lost 5-1 at Motherwell last time out and made three changes for Sunday’s meeting - in came Carter, Ross and Martin, Guthrie, Robb and former Don Phoebe Murray out. The Dons had the perfect start on the road, opening the scoring after just three minutes. Naomi McLaughlin's corner asked questions of the Montrose defence, Finnie on hand to react first to Ogilvie's flick on, heading beyond Perry for her second Aberdeen goal on her 99th appearance. It was nearly 2-0 on 15' Perry this time making a smart stop to deny an Aberdeen second. The Mo' were largely in the ascendency throughout the half despite The Dons holding the advantage, Cox called into action to deny both Taylor and Martin. The storm was weathered with little drama however and Aberdeen went in ahead at the break. Half-time. Montrose 0-1 Aberdeen. The second half began with appeals from the hosts for a penalty after claims the ball came off Finnegan’s hand inside the area, the defender already on a booking. Hand in a natural position, the decision: play on. Booth went to his bench on 68’, Jess Broadrick and Aimee Black replacing Selbie and McLaughlin. Montrose were next to switch things about, Neve Guthrie coming on for Georgia Carter minutes later. The hosts continued to have the lion share of possession, chances at a premium. The relentless pressure finally relented with five minutes to go, Martin levelling for the hosts, the forward on the end of Taylor’s cross, Cox unable to claim. In truth, a deserved leveller for Montrose. Chasing a winner, Alex Clarke was introduced at the death, replacing Brodie Greenwood. Montrose looked to have won it deep into injury time, striking the post. Devastation was to follow for The Dons. In the 96th minute and with Aberdeen unable to clear their lines, Taylor turned from provider to goal scorer, finding the back of the net to ensure it was Montrose who secured all three points in the most dramatic of fashion. Despite being ahead for 82 minutes, Aberdeen take nothing from Links Park, leaving them seven behind Montrose, while also plunging them even deeper into relegation play-off worry with three games of the season to go.
