It is a meeting of the champions of SWPL1 and SWPL2 on Wednesday evening as Aberdeen Women take on Glasgow City at Glebe Park. The Dons will be looking to return to winning ways after losing out to Hibs in the SWPL Cup on Sunday.
Aberdeen’s co-manager, Gavin Beith, previewed the game:
“Glasgow are not only the reigning champions but they’ve won the league for the last fourteen consecutive seasons. It goes without saying that this will be another very tough game for us as we come off the disappointment of back-to-back defeats against Hibernian.
“It was disappointing to go out of the cup in the quarter-final to Hibs but I think we can reflect positively on our performance in the competition. We got out of our group, which was one of our pre-season objectives and there are many positives that we can take from our involvement in this season’s SWPL Cup.
“The score in both of our games against Hibs was quite close and we have to take positives from those matches and there were many positives to take. The top teams in the division all have great quality so we know what kind of challenge we are going to face against City.
“City are a team that is full of international players so there can be no doubting the quality in their squad. When you come up against teams of that quality you sometimes need to ride your luck a wee bit. We showed, particularly in the second half against Hibs that we do have the ability to get on the ball and compete against the top teams and we always look to compete in all of our games.
“We want to go out and impose ourselves and let our opponents know that they are in for a tough game. We’ll approach it like we do every game and try to play our way and compete we know we can. Every game in this league is a tough game but in facing the reigning champions, you’re playing against the best team in the country. The players need to enjoy challenging themselves against the country’s top side.
“We’re playing at Brechin for this match which is different surroundings for us. It’s a grass pitch and just like our opponents tonight, that is somewhat different as most of the teams play and train on artificial surfaces.
“It won’t change our approach though and we’ll be ready to go out and give it our all to cause a surprise and get something from the game.”
Winger Johan Fraser also looks ahead to Wednesday night’s game:
“It is going to be a very tough game, everyone knows how good Glasgow City are. They have dominated the league for so many years and have set the standard for women’s football in Scotland.
“Everyone has huge respect for them.
“We just have to look forward to it and try and improve on the performances we have put in over the past couple of weeks. The results have been disappointing but we always knew there would be some tough moments during this season. We can’t get too down or over think it. We have to keep training well and concentrate on improving week on week.
“And I think we are doing that.
“Every time we come up against a tough opponent, we learn a lot. After the disappointment of the Rangers game, I thought we put in two decent enough performances against Hibs. As a team we were a lot stronger defensively.
“It is about learning from our mistakes and trying to do better the following week. Improve on the bits we need to do better. And also taking any positives we can from the games.
“The coaches are working tirelessly and every training session is well thought through to try and help us get stronger as a team. Against Glasgow we have to try and implement the game plan they put in place.”
