Aberdeen Women play their fourth game in 10 days on Wednesday evening when they take on Dundee United in SWPL1. The fixture is a home one for The Dons but is being played at the Balmoor Stadium due to the availability of the Balmoral Stadium. Kick-off is 7:30pm.
Both sides head into the game level on 14 points in the league, with The Dons sitting in ninth position in the league, a place ahead of tomorrow’s opponents because of a better goal difference.
Entry for tomorrow’s game is free for all, we are looking forward to welcoming as many supporters to the game as possible.
Academy Director Gavin Levey looks ahead to the game:
“On the back of a very good performance against Hearts, we then went and beat Glasgow Women. The points are important but the performance was far from acceptable from an Aberdeen team. Credit to Glasgow, they are fighting hard to get points on the board, and they stayed in the game and made it a contest to the end. We were way off the pace and that is something we addressed with the squad.
“Then against Rangers, it was hard enough getting a squad together to get down to Glasgow midweek with the way the fixtures have been, but we managed, and we felt like we achieved something by doing that. But then to lose your goalkeeper in any game is a challenge but to lose them before playing one of the best teams in the league that is full of internationals, it’s a massive task. Our job was to come out fighting. When Annalisa pulled up it meant trying to readjust focus, figure out what we were going to do, settle the girls down and reinforce our plan, which was to try and deny Rangers shooting opportunities. I thought we did relatively well.
“Out with Europe and a penalty league leaders Glasgow City scored, nobody else has scored against Rangers. Normally before games we will look at areas where other teams have scored, so that’s another challenge, we must look at moments where teams have maybe created the odd chance. Rangers have some great players, they are strong and play some nice stuff, but we play to our strengths. We had an average age of 19 last Wednesday night, the youthfulness mixed with the experience we have gives us the freedom to go out and compete.
“On Sunday against Celtic you could see we were on our last legs at the end a little bit, playing two professional teams in the space of four days, it’s going to naturally take its toll. We are very young. Whilst we fought, we sat too deep and invited more and more pressure on. While we did defend well, we have got to learn that we need to get higher and put more pressure on the ball. We’ve always got to show these better teams that we also have a threat going forward.
“Beth Walker our physio is brilliant, her level of detail and her passion to get the players back on the pitch and feeling good about themselves is huge. The workload to prepare for each of these games is massive, but as I keep saying we won’t be the victim, we will come out tonight fighting and firing on all cylinders.
“I must also give a mention to captain Loren Campbell who made her 100th appearance for Aberdeen Women. Loren is a great character and was obviously part of Aberdeen Ladies before we took over and made it Aberdeen Women. She is a feisty player. I think arguably she is playing the best football of her career at the moment, she’s really added an attacking threat. She’s playing so well right now and you can see the reason why she’s the captain.
“Wednesday night is another big game for us in the context of our season. We are level on points with Dundee United and despite us not being at our usual home ground it is still a home match for us and we are hoping to get a big support to cheer us on to victory.”
