In the second minute Rooney had a wonderful turn and shot that was tipped over the bar, but a minute later Rooney turned provider when he took the ball wide and sent in a cross that Hayes slid into the net to send the red army into raptures.

Aberdeen are in the final of the League Cup following an emphatic win over St. Johnstone as the red army celebrated in style. The Dons made the perfect start to the cup tie as they were on the front foot from the word go. In the second minute Rooney had a wonderful turn and shot that was tipped over the bar, but a minute later Rooney turned provider when he took the ball wide and sent in a cross that Hayes slid into the net to send the red army into raptures. Saints didn’t let the early set back affect them and aided by some soft decisions they carved out a couple of chances from set pieces. As the half progressed the huge red army were getting incensed by some of the decisions from referee Madden. In the 27th minute Langfield made a world class save from Croft to concede the Saints fifth corner. How important would that be to the outcome? Following almost total possesion from the Saints, Hayes broke just after the half hour mark and set up Pawlett for a brilliant second.

Saints carved out the first chance after the break when Wright looped a header on to the crossbar after 51 minutes. Eight minutes later Aberdeen nearly grabbed a third when Banks made a fine save from Pawlettt, but then took Rooney down in the scramble for the loose ball. As everyone in red screamed for a spot kick a free kick was awarded to Saints as Rooney had been flagged offside. The fanc only had to wait two minutes for the third when Pawlett surged forward and released Rooney who calmly slotted the ball past Banks to put the Dons on easy street. The Dons were in control now and Hayes fired an effort inches over the bar before Considine hit the woodwork. The Dons then completed the route in the 78th click hereminute when Rooney released Hayes and he raced forward, cut inside and capped a fine performance with his second goal of the match.
