Jim Goodwin | St Mirren Reaction

Jim Goodwin was left to rue a self-inflicted wound that turned the game at St Mirren on its head, as he explained after the game. “To be in front and to have played as well as we did in the first half an hour, to then shoot ourselves in the foot in the manner we did is the hardest thing to take. At 1-0, we were in control. “You know St Mirren are direct, aggressive, they’re a big team, one of the most physical in the league, so you have to stand up and be counted when the ball comes in your box. The boys did that. But their equaliser is of our own making.

“You know St Mirren are direct, aggressive, they’re a big team, one of the most physical in the league, so you have to stand up and be counted when the ball comes in your box. The boys did that. But their equaliser is of our own making.

“We needed to play forward in the first occasion rather than playing back, then Anthony’s experienced enough to know he needs to do a lot better in that situation. He made a mistake, no arguments with the red card, but from the angle that I’ve watched back, it looks as if he fouled him outside the box – I may be wrong on that, they may have a different angle. The referee gave a free-kick and was overruled by VAR, but I was surprised he didn’t come and look at the monitor and make his own decision from there.

“I thought the boys were excellent in the second half as a whole, particularly in trying to get an equaliser in the last half an hour. There was some poor decision making on our part for the penalties but when Kelle saved the third penalty, I thought it gave us a lift and the boys were excellent from there. We were the team that looked most likely to get the next goal.

“It would have been easy for the players to throw the towel in at 2-1 but they kept working and we should have had an equaliser. Ramadani hit the bar, there were a couple of other opportunities where we weren’t able to hit the target, then we had a great chance from Matty Kennedy’s free-kick to the back post but Ryan Duncan and Christian Ramirez ended up getting in each other’s way. If we had got the equaliser, I feel we would have deserved it.”
