Irn Bru Cup Draw 2016-17

Tomorrow Aberdeen U20’s side will find out who they are to face in their first ever Irn-Bru cup tie when the first round draw takes place at 11.30am at Hampden Park.

The extension of the competition means that the young Dons, along with all other fellow SPFL U20’s sides, will enter the competition in the first round along with four teams each from the Highland League and Lowland League as well as eight League 2 sides.

Paul Sheerin’s squad have been placed in Pool A of the North Section meaning they will be drawn against one of seven teams including city neighbours Cove Rangers and Paul’s former team Arbroath. The Dons other potential opponents are Formartine United, Brora Rangers, Turriff United, Stirling Albion or Montrose.

Paul Sheerin had this to say about his side’s inaugural appearance in the competition: “We’ve got the Irn Bru Cup this year which is a really good test for younger players. It would be great to get a run in it, but it will be extremely difficult as there is the obvious gulf in age and experience between us and the senior teams. It would still be excellent to get through 2 or 3 rounds and test ourselves against senior teams.  “It would be good to go back to play against Montrose. It would be the first time I’d managed against them and it would be nice to see how we get on, but whoever we draw we will deal with it.”

The draw will be announced across our social media platforms tomorrow.
