Nesta Guinness-Walker: Now it's about us pushing on

Nesta Guinness-Walker was clear that nothing less than three points was ever going to be enough in the game with St Mirren.

“It was a massive result to win the game. Every time we come out at Pittodrie, we want to win football games, and I think as a group, after losing to St Johnstone, we had to come out and get goals, be a threat and take the game to them. We had no other objective apart from three points, by hook or by crook, and in the second half, we got it done.

“We've come to Aberdeen for a reason and at home, we can’t accept anything less than winning games. We take that responsibility and try and give it our all. I think second half, we had that reaction, came out and showed some quality. We could have got more. We had chances, created chances, but three points was the main thing today, so we are just happy we got that.

“When I signed here, I realised the magnitude of the club and that's something that I've embraced, that's something that I wanted. I love walking out in front of the fans and having that bit of pressure, and stepping up to it. I think that's a privilege, really.

“The Gaffer put the onus on us this week in training to be a threat going forward, create chances and be a threat on the goal. I think we've done that. We could have got four, five or six, we had a lot of chances. I think that's credit to the quality we've got up front.

“The first half was a bit frustrating. Brad got us off to a great start, showing his quality with a high-level finish, but we didn’t kick on. The first half was difficult. Marius made some big saves for us. He knows that your goalie's there for big moments, big saves. He might not have much to do, but then he's called upon to keep us in the game. Marius is a brilliant shot stopper. I think he's shown that since he's come to the club. It's always nice, as a defender, to know you've got big Marius behind you who will make some top saves.

“St Mirren, they keep the ball well, they move the ball well, but when we're at Pittodrie, we want to take the game to teams and I think in the second half, we did that. We needed a reaction. I think the substitutions helped that, and we really came out second half hungry for the three points and got the job done.

“It was about regrouping at half-time and coming out with the bit between our teeth and making it happen. Obviously, the subs helped, Stuart with his ball carrying and Tony looked pretty lively.

“As teammates, we all bring better attributes out of each other's games and I think when Tony got on, he was really positive, really direct, trying to make things happen and that's what the Gaffer asked him to do. That gives me the opportunity to try and get forward as well, which is obviously a big part of my game.”

The win took the Dons to within a point of the top half, and Nesta is clear that from here, Aberdeen need to find greater consistency if they are to end up where they need to be in the table.

“We’re near the top six now, and as a group, that's our ambition, that's what we want to strive for. For us now, it's important to get some momentum and put back-to-back results together and show that we can be a really good side.

“The Manager is very demanding. That's what you want. He knows the quality of our group. We know it within ourselves. We put pressure on each other to make sure we're performing at a level that we expect of each other and I think we showed that, especially in the second half. Now it's about us pushing on.”
