“The main thing is we have got through the game without any injuries. We have also got in amongst the goals and I was pleased with the overall performance. In the first half we played some good football and it was a competitive match. The second half with all the changes made the game feel a bit like a testimonial. The one bit of quality in the second half was Niall’s third goal.
“Niall has now scored four goals in two pre-season games which is very pleasing.
“It is always important for your strikers to get on the score sheet. Josh scored on Tuesday against Buckie and Scott Vernon also scored today and Niall has just continued where he left off last season.
“So far in the two games we have scored seven goals and just conceded one goal, which was a penalty and was a bit soft so I am pleased with the work that has been done so far.
“Pre-season games though are not all about the results, they are about the player’s fitness and in Ireland we will get the match fitness up.
“We put on a number of the young lads in the second half. These games are all part of their development. It is important that they stake a claim on these occasions as these boys will be called upon as we have a tight squad during what will be a long campaign. I am confident these young boys can step up.
“Overall it was a good exercise for us. We knew we would get a competitive game. I was pleased to take a team up here to honour Russell. There was a good crowd and I am sure he will have enjoyed his day and his goal as well.”
