The Dons completed a solid week of football on the road by collecting a point in a tight encounter at Easter Road – four points from six and a place in the Premier Sports Cup semi-final represents a good week of work from three away games in a row. After Aberdeen’s impressive win on Tuesday night at Fir Park, Stephen Robinson named a side with one change. Lewis Mayo missed out with injury so Jack Milne stepped into the defence. There was a first appearance in the matchday squad for Hicham Mahou. Hibernian were beaten 1-0 by Kilmarnock at Easter Road last time out which saw the end of David Gray’s reign. Caretaker Manager John Potter made five changes and was forced into an additional one when ex-Don Jamie McGrath was injured in the warm-up. Chris Cadden started the game on his 30th birthday with his twin brother Nicky on the Hibs bench. The game kicked off in warm but blustery conditions. Milne was forced to give away a corner early on, the Dons defending it well. Kevin Nisbet put over a dangerous cross a few minutes later but failed to find Toyosi Olusanya. After a positive start from both teams, the game then lacked any real fluency. Hibs were enjoying more of the possession, with Martin Boyle as ever looking lively, but he was being well marked. Aberdeen opened the scoring on 17 minutes. Nisbet started the move, spreading the ball wide to Cadden with a clever pass. The right-back stepped inside and found Molloy, who had space in front of him. The Irishman stepped forward and pulled his shot, which landed at the feet of Nisbet. The striker swivelled and placed the ball low into the corner, past Raphael Sallinger. An excellent finish and goal number 12 for the season. Aberdeen were now in the ascendancy and took the game to the home side, winning a couple of corners. Marshall whipped in a couple of great deliveries which landed right under the bar After a good spell of pressure from the Dons, they were slightly fortunate on 22 minutes when Josh Mulligan beat both Connor Ronan and Nesta Guiness-Walker on the right. His low cross to the front post was blocked by a combination of Milne and Marius Muller. Aberdeen then had a good break which they should have done better with, Guinness-Walker hitting a long range shot well over when there were other options. He appeared to have another good opportunity on 27 minutes, but the referee blew for a foul by Olusanya inside the area. On the half hour mark, Findlay Marshall won a free-kick about 35 yards out when his driving run was halted. Nisbet saw his effort deflected over the bar for another Marshall corner, which Sallinger did well to punch clear. Nisbet received the first yellow card on 33 minutes. Play was allowed to continue and Aberdeen were slightly fortunate that Milligan elected not to shoot after doing well to find space inside a crowded area. Miguel Chaiwa then blasted high and wide from the edge of the area after another dangerous attack had only been half cleared. After an uncomfortable little spell, the Dons then enjoyed a period of possession which finished with Ronan trying his luck from 30 odd yards five minutes before the interval, the ball whistling just past the post, although the keeper appeared to have it covered. The half-time whistle came as the heavens opened. It had been a decent first 45 from Stephen Robinson’s men, they were looking fairly secure at the back and had it not been for the final pass going astray, could have added to their lead. HALF-TIME: HIBERNIAN 0 ABERDEEN 1 As expected, the home side came flying out of the traps in the opening minutes of the second half but the Dons had the first chance when Nisbet did well to win the ball and play in Aremu. He played it to Olusanya, the striker firing a shot across the face of goal. Olusanya then had the ball in the net after another good break but was flagged offside The game was really open and end to end at this stage. On 55 minutes, Knoester produced a great piece of defending to cut out a cross after Hibs got in behind the Dons’ backline, then Aberdeen were almost made to pay for not clearing their lines, but Mulligan fired over. Hibs had stepped up the pressure and just before the hour mark, Aberdeen had to deal with the series of corners. They then won a free-kick 25 yards out after Milne picked up booking for a foul. Just before the hour, Stuart Armstrong replaced Ronan. Elding should have done better with a free header inside the area but a minute later, but after another corner Milne was adjudged to have fouled Kerr and the referee pointed to the spot. Martin Boyle hammered in the spot kick and the teams were level at 1-1 after 62 minutes. Marshall won a corner on 63, which the young midfielder took, leading to another corner where Milne was so unlucky to see his header blocked by the keeper’s feet on the line, a very good save. In amongst all that, Knoester had appealed for a penalty after he was taken down. Moments later, a good pass from Armstrong through the lines found Molloy and his cross was inches over the top of Nisbet’s head. Hibs then made a double change with Lowe and Suto replacing Elding and Boyle with 20 minutes to go, before Olusanya was replaced by Ayoub Mouloua. More Dons pressure followed, a free-kick, a corner and a long throw all causing problems but no one could get a vital touch. With 15 minutes to go, there was a massive let off when Passlack headed a free-kick wide from close range. With 10 to go, a double change as Briedl and Happe came on for Milne and Marshall. Nisbet then lifted a shot just over. Great play from Aremu drew a professional foul from Cahiwa who received a yellow card, the deep free-kick well claimed by Sallinger. Could either side find a winner? On 89 minutes Mouloua could not quite find Nisbet with his throw, and at the other end mats made a great block. Aberdeen had a free kick in the second minutes of added time, Hibs had a corner in third, but both teams had to settle for a draw. A fair result in the end.
