Aberdeen Women came from a goal behind to claim an important victory over Boroughmuir Thistle in the Quarter-final of the Sky Sports Cup on Sunday afternoon.

The Dons had trailed to an early goal but strikes from Hannah Stewart, Darcie Miller and Niamh Noble sealed their place in the Semi-final.

Aberdeen almost took the lead inside the opening minute, as Emily Kraft pounced on a slack back-pass and raced through on goal but it was well-recovered by Boroughmuir defender Caitlin Lynch.

The hosts took the lead with just 6 minutes played after a chipped ball over the defence landed perfectly for the run of Emily Arthur. The Boroughmuir forward made no mistake with a brilliant finish which looped over a helpless Megan Sidey in the Aberdeen goal.

Aberdeen struggled to gain any real control for the next 15 minutes, with the game descending into a midfield battle.

Hannah Stewart came close with an effort from range after 25 minutes, but her strike was just wide of the post.

The Dons started to control more of the ball in the final 15 minutes of the half, with Hannah Innes threading an enticing ball over the top of the Boroughmuir defence towards the byline, but it was just out of reach for Darcie Miller.

Holly McEvoy was next to have a shot on goal after a free-kick from the halfway line was cleared only as far McEvoy, but her volleyed effort was well wide of the mark.

McEvoy was at it again just a few moments later, after she turned her marker brilliantly on the halfway line before playing a 1-2 with Emily Kraft, with her looping half-volley this time landing on the roof of the net.

Aberdeen were awarded a penalty just before half-time, as Darcie Miller was fouled in the box after a great cross from Niamh Noble.

Captain Hannah Stewart stepped forward and showed her composure as she slotted her penalty into the bottom left corner to level the score.

Boroughmuir almost extended their lead just before the break when Cara Borthwick broke down the right and fired a great cross into the box but it was just out of reach for Emily Arthur and was turned behind for a corner by Aimee Black.

The resulting corner caused some issues for Aberdeen and was only cleared as far as Amy Forbes but her tame first-time effort was blocked by Hannah Innes. Megan Sidey was alert moments later and the Aberdeen shot-stopper pulled off a great reaction save to keep the score level heading into the break.

Half-time, Boroughmuir Thistle 1-1 Aberdeen Women.

Aberdeen took the lead almost immediately after the restart when Chloe Gover played a delightful ball into the path of Francesca Ogilvie, who raced round the defender before sending in a perfectly-weighted cross which found Darcie Miller.

The forward made no mistake from 6 yards and headed past Toni Harkness in the Boroughmuir goal to give Aberdeen the lead.

Aberdeen controlled much of the game for the next 25 minutes and were quite content to protect their lead, with the Dons defence doing well to nullify any Boroughmuir threat.

Hannah Stewart tried her luck from range in the 75th minute but it was well-held by Toni Harkness.

The Dons almost extended their lead minutes later, when Emily Kraft was sent through on goal and managed to round the keeper, but her touch was too wide and her shot was blocked behind for a corner by Amy Forbes.

Niamh Noble produced a potential goal of the season contender from the ensuing corner, as her curling in-swinging corner looped over Toni Harkness in the Boroughmuir goal and went directly in to give Aberdeen a two goal cushion.

Chloe Gover went inches wide from a free-kick which skimmed along the ground, with Boroughmuir taking the goal kick quickly and breaking up the other end, with Olivia Forsyth failing to turn home an inviting cross at the back-post for the home side.

The Dons continued to defend well as Boroughmuir threw everything at them in the dying minutes, with Amy Forbes heading over the bar with the final chance of the game for the hosts.

Aberdeen done well to survive their early scare and were worthy winners to advance into the semi-final.

The draw for the Semi-final is due to take place on Tuesday afternoon, live on Sky Sports News.

Full-time. Boroughmuir Thistle 1-3 Aberdeen Women.
