Derek McInnes Reaction

After the 1-1 draw at New Douglas Park, manager Derek McInnes gave his reaction “I thought we were not at our best today. “We got off to a great start, it was a fantastic strike by Kenny. We then had opportunities to get a second goal but the whole time I did not think we were convincing enough with our defensive work. We gave Hamilton every encouragement that they could get something from the game. We played in the wrong areas at times and did not defend as well as we would have liked. “We were not clinical enough at one end and at the other end we were not at our best.

“I thought we were not at our best today.

“You normally have to play very well to win at Hamilton. That goes for any team coming here. If you don’t play well then you normally don’t win the game.

“You are playing against an opponent who wants to get after you, wants to get on top of you, they put so much into the game. You are a good side and you would have to say they deserved a point. Both teams earned a point today but neither probably did enough to win the game.

“Whenever we did play in the right areas, when we got our ball carriers on the ball, when we played in the wider areas and when we got the ball forward quickly I thought we got up the pitch and we looked threatening. But we never got the second goal that would have allowed us to have the confidence to go on and get the three points.

“You have to say Hamilton kept going. I thought it was touch and go if their goal was offside but as I say they deserved their point.

“We will take the positives, the fact we managed to get something despite not being at our best. We take a point, we add it to the three we won against Dundee United and we move on.

“This is plenty of effort but we have to make sure we do things better. There was still some decent parts to our play today when we did get the ball down and played in the right areas. We looked like ourselves when we did that but you are never going to get it all your own way and when the other team asks questions of you, you have to stand up to it. You also can’t give them any encouragement by inviting pressure.

“There are still something like 60 odd points available. I think it is too early to be obsessed with what other teams are doing. We just have to manage our own game. Our fight is with ourselves at the minute. We are confident that we will win enough games over the course of the season to meet what is expected of us. Ryan Jack turned his ankle by blocking a shot in training. He is probably doubtful for next week as well.”
