The manger spoke to REDTV to look back on the end of the season and reflects on the contract news announced earlier in the day.

“Russell and Barry still have a lot to contribute and that is the biggest factor. Whether you are a 16 year old or a 36 year old it does not matter to me. As long as you are making a contribution.

“Barry’s contribution was a bit stop start after he picked up an injury at the start of the campaign and we did not get him back till the early part of December. When he is in the team you see the influence he has. We are fortunate to have someone with that mentality and ability he possesses. He has a real pride in his performances and pride and in his fitness and that shines though. He has a huge part to play next season.

“We are all so pleased for Russell in terms of him being a successful Aberdeen captain. He has been available to me far more than people anticipated. For me he is tried and trusted and brought a level of performance to the side this season.

“Both are very keen to remain part of things here and they are doing all they can. That is the sort of commitment we need throughout the club. They both see the potential of the team and are desperate to be part of it.

“Nicky Low is also important to us. I love how he trains. I love how disappointed he is when he is not playing. I love his confidence in himself and how he backs himself to be an Aberdeen regular. He has been associated with the club for a long time and he loves being here. He played an important part for the team last season, especially in the cup final. But Nicky wants more and we have given him another year for him to try and do that and force his way into the team.

“We are actively trying to get some signings done. With the European games it is important we get two or three in if we can to help the squad. We have the nucleus of the team and the squad signed up for the next few seasons which is pleasing but that is not a reason for us not to be working hard to try and bring in players who can improve us going forward.

“Shay Logan has indicated that he is interested in remain here. We like Shay. He has a lot to offer in terms of personality. He settled at the club and the city. We are still speaking to him and his agent. We will do all we can within our means to make it happen.”
