“I am very pleased with the news today. It is something we have been trying to move forward since the last couple of weeks of the season.

“I sat down and indicated my plans for Ryan and said he was going to be a vital player for us going forward and that I was really looking forward to working with him. He said from the outset that if a deal can be done he would be happy to commit and like Niall there were absolutely no problems. Both players made it very clear they did not want to go anywhere else and both saw their futures at Pittodrie.

“Ryan is only a player who is going to get better. He has to keep working hard and looking for that improvement in his game but he has a bright future. He is a very good age, he has a good temperament and steely determination and I am looking forward to working with him. Physically he has still got a bit to go but he does not get pushed about in the middle of the park. He has a quiet confidence about him which you need when you are playing in that position.

“The best way for him to learn is to play competitive matches.

“He has been very versatile for us which is good. He can play in a number of different positions but he will predominantly play in midfield. I am not saying he will not be used in other positions at times but we see him as a midfielder.

“We have been stung in the past with young players leaving the club and probably leaving too early. I can understand the temptation to maybe go down south for various reasons but the inclusion of Ryan in the Scotland squad would justify and vindicate how well he has done at Aberdeen. It is good the national manager has recognised his performances.

“During the short time I have worked with him he has been very consistent day in day out and in the matches.

“The signing of Ryan and Niall gives us good stability and we are now looking for that continued improvement in both players as they are both going to be very important for us.”

“The new manager came in at the end of the season and had watched me in training and in the games and wanted to extend my contract. When he told me I said it was something I would be looking to do as well and I am delighted with my new deal.

“I know I still have things to learn and I feel this is the best place for me to do that. I spoke to the manager and he has assured me that I will achieve what I want to achieve and he is going to help me develop my game as well. I was delighted to hear that.

“With the new signings plus the players we have got already got here, as well as the young players coming through, we have a good squad and there is a lot to look forward to.

“I have played against Willo Flood quite a few times, I have not played against Barry Robson that often but have obviously watched him on TV. Both are very good players and two great signings. Both have experience and can help me develop my game.

“I am looking forward to pre-season. It has not been that short a break for myself but I am really looking forward to getting back and getting down to work with the new management team. I think it will be a really good season. With the new signings and with Niall signing his new deal it has been a good summer and the club have shown that they are going places. The manager has help create a very positive atmosphere at Pittodrie.”
