“I think what the players showed tonight was real determination.

“I thought the work rate in the first half was very good and I was very pleased with the performance first half. We were just looking for that little bit of quality in the final third.

“Unfortunately for us we have hit the bar and snatched at a couple of chances and dragged shots past the post. So at half time I was wanting more of the same with the players just having more confidence in front of goal to show their ability.

“Unfortunately for us it was Lawless who has shown that quality. He should not have been allowed to get the ball onto his left side, I was disappointed with that. He should have been kept away from goal but he has still got a lot to do and he has smacked it into the top hand corner. They showed the quality we were looking for.

“It was then a big ask and we had to dig deep.

“The players deserve so much credit for it because people would have questioned the player’s character (had we not won). That was not what it was about tonight. The only thing we were lacking was a little bit of quality and a bit of thought to our play. The determination was there, the character was there.

“I was proud of that performance tonight and that is why I love working with these boys.

“Their attitude was typified when Shay Logan spirted past Andrew Considine after he scored to get the ball out of the net. We knew the importance of winning the game.

“It was a real golden minute for us with the two goals.

“I thought Robson’s influence was clear in both those goals. But everyone played their part. “We believe we can win games. We have always felt that. I take inspiration from my own team, from the way they train every day.

“Even tonight we had the blow of naming the team with McGinn being in the side then half way through the set plays today he felt an injury he had been struggling with and had to pull out.

“We have missed some big players the last couple of weeks but we have still managed to get some decent results.

“We now have some momentum so we need to keep dragging performances out of the team. There will be more games like the one this evening between now and the end of the season but I am loving it to be honest. I think it will be a roller-coaster and there will be a lot of nervous games.

“Simon has become a very important player for us, even more so without Adam. Taking his number of goals out of your team is hard but Simon has come in and done brilliantly. We thought he would add goals and we hoped to get the two of them together on the same pitch to bring us that double threat. But without Adam he has stepped up, he really has. His goal tonight, he got across his man and finished off a great ball from Barry. Four goals in six games, he has been very important so far. Hopefully there are more winning goals to come from him.

“We are going to get Niall scanned tomorrow. He has a really sore bit at the top of his foot/ankle. He took a kick against Dundee United in the first half. He had not trained until yesterday but came through that without any affects but felt it this morning. We hoped by missing this one he would be ok for Saturday. Hopefully both Niall and Barry will be ok for the weekend.
