Bwomono joins on short-term deal

Ugandan international defender Elvis Bwomono has joined the club on a short-term deal until the end of the current season.

The 27-year-old, who most recently enjoyed a second spell in Iceland with ÍBV, impressed during a short trial period, including in a closed-door win over Dundee at Pittodrie.

Prior to his time with the Westman Islands club, he worked briefly with Stephen Robinson at St Mirren helping them to get a top six finish and progress to Europe, following a four-year spell with English side Southend United.

Stephen Robinson said: “Elvis is a player I know well from my time at St Mirren and his versatility will give us important cover across several positions.

“He’s quick, athletic and comfortable operating in a back three, at full-back and even in midfield when needed.

“We brought him into Cormack Park this week to assess his fitness and sharpness, and he acquitted himself well, particularly in the bounce game on Wednesday.

“With Sivert moving on, it was important that we added some additional cover, especially at the back where we currently have several players unavailable through injury, including Kristers Tobers, Mats Knoester, Nicky Devlin and Tom McIntyre.

“At this stage of the season, bringing players in can carry a degree of risk as many will lack fitness or indeed availability of players is scarce, so it helps that I’ve worked with Elvis before. He understands the league and the standards we expect.”

Bwomono made his international debut for Uganda in 2020, playing his part in a 1-0 win over South Sudan.

He has since gone on to make a further 13 appearances for the Cranes, with his most recent cap coming in a friendly against Cameroon at the start of the current campaign.

Elvis Bwomono said: “I’m delighted to be here and looking forward to working with the manager again.

“I want to help the team as much as I can. Even in the short time I’ve been in, you can see the quality in the group. Training has been intense and, even in the bounce game, you could see the players taking on what the manager is asking for.

“We’ve got seven big games ahead and my focus is on doing everything I can to help the team finish the season as strongly as possible.”
