Aberdeen’s goalscoring hero Angus MacDonald has played plenty of football in his career, but even he had to admit the game in Helsinki was something very different.
“That’s probably the coldest conditions I’ve played in, the toughest as well with the way the pitch was. Second half, when the snow was really coming down, you’re trying to keep your footing, you’ve got snow in your eyes! But it was a great experience.
“The family will be watching back home so it will be nice to make them proud with my goal.
“I would be lying if I said I worked on that every day! I don’t. It is just one of them you hit and it finds the back of the net.
“I used to be a striker when I was 10! So I maybe remembered something from those days!
“Touch and hit and get back into position as soon as possible!
“We weren’t really at it for a spell in the first half, but as soon as that goal went in, it changed the game and from then on, we showed the Aberdeen that the fans want to see. It’s a shame we couldn’t go on and win the game. Helsinki are a great team but we maybe gave them too much respect to start with but as we got the goal and grew into the game, there was no looking back.”
