Chris Cadden spoke to the media for the first time as an Aberdeen player ahead of Saturday's trip to Dens Park.

A busy few days

“It has been good. It’s obviously been a bit of a mad week for us. It’s calmed down now, but yeah, I’ve really enjoyed it. The boys have been brilliant, the gaffer’s been really good and I’ve just really enjoyed it so far.

“It was a bit mad. Obviously, I played with Hibs on the Thursday in the European tie and then I was obviously keen to get it done as soon as possible. So we drove up after the game, got in at two in the morning, had the medical on the Friday, then trained on the Friday, then obviously the game on Saturday.

“So it was a bit of a whirlwind. I couldn’t really think too much about everything, I just went with it. But as I said, I’m really enjoying it and I think that quick turnaround helped me really. I was just chucked in at the deep end, and thankfully we got the win as well, which really helped.”

Why The Dons

“In terms of the stage of my career, my age, I think I’m just coming into my prime years, hopefully.

“I felt I was ready for a new challenge as well.

“So all that from my side of things, but also the club, the size of the club, the fanbase and everything that comes along with that. I know how big Aberdeen is. I’ve played against them plenty times up here, and I know how big the club is.

“So as soon as I heard about the interest, it was something I was really keen to get done and it just felt like the perfect fit for me at this stage in my career. I’m obviously grateful to be here at such a big club as well, and for the gaffer and the coaching staff to put their faith in me to bring me.

“That’s maybe partly why I needed a change. I loved my time at Hibs. It was great. I had really successful times there. I think sometimes you need a little bit of change in your career and a fresh start. Aberdeen is the perfect club for me to do that I feel like.

“The size of the club and the pull of Aberdeen was massive for me. I wasn’t just going to jump ship. It had to be the right move and the right club, and I feel like this is.”

A new chapter

“I’ll give my all every single week and try my best. If it doesn’t work, it won’t be because a lack of trying. I feel like I’m in a really good place physically. I’ve had nearly 350 games under my belt, so the experience is there as well. I just feel like I’m ready to go again, and I’m excited to do that.

“Obviously, you’ve got to realise it’s a lot of new players, so it does take time. There were a lot of new players on Saturday. But it’s Aberdeen as well. We should be going for the top six, Europe, things like that. That’s where we want to be. That’s where everybody at the club wants to be.

“Realistically, with the new players we’ve signed as well, it’s about finding that balance. I just want to be successful. The game at the weekend showed character as well, which I thought was great.

“The standard in training and everything I’ve seen has really impressed me. It’s all about taking it one game at a time but also realising this is a massive football club that expects success and we hope to bring that.

A positive atmosphere

“I thought you felt that as soon as you walked into the building. The atmosphere is massive in terms of your day-to-day work and you get that from the boys, the manager. I’ve only been here a week and I’ve sensed that already, which is really good.

"Winning games helps, of course, but you can feel that already. Long may it continue."

The influence of Stephen Robinson

“Obviously I mentioned the pull of the football club as a big reason to come here, but the manager was a massive part of it as well. I’ve played under him before, we had successful times at Motherwell and I really enjoyed his football and what he brings.

“He was a massive pull for me as well and he really wanted me, which was big. I’m excited. I can see what the gaffer can bring and the success he can bring to a football club and the continuity he can create. I’m really excited for that."

Personal attributes

“Probably first and foremost, hard work, legs, energy and running power. That’s the main thing I try to bring at the start of games. Hopefully some crosses into the box as well. I’m an attacking full-back. I can play anywhere and if the gaffer puts me anywhere, I’ll give it my best. Solid defender as well, so a mix of both.

“(Strongest position) As long as I’m on the pitch! Right-back probably. I’ve done it my whole career. I’m 29 now, so I’ve dealt with that my whole career. Anywhere the gaffer puts me, I’ll try my best and hopefully can put in a good performance for him.

Dealing with pressure

“I think every game you come to Aberdeen you expect pressure, but that’s why you play for such a big club.

“If you don’t like pressure or don’t want to deal with pressure, then there’s probably no point in coming to Aberdeen because that’s what you’re going to get. You felt that on Saturday. You turned up, a full house (against) a team that was challenging for the league and you could feel there was an expectation to win, which thankfully we did.

“That’s what you want. That’s why you come to a football club like Aberdeen. That’s why you work all your life to come to a club like Aberdeen.

“If you get here and don’t like the pressure, then there’s not really any point in doing it. It’s something we need to thrive off, and I think we did that on Saturday.

The highs and the lows

“It was in the works for a while, and I think a change was needed personally. But when Aberdeen came, that was the one I really wanted. I’m under no illusions where I’ve started and where I’ve come from. To get to a club like Aberdeen is a massive success for me.

"I know that and I’m really grateful and happy to be here. I’ve enjoyed it so far and hopefully that continues.

“There’ll obviously be teething coming into a new environment. There’ll be challenges throughout the season. We know that as boys. It’s not going to be plain sailing all the way. That’s football, that’s life.

“There’ll be ups and downs. It’s about, as a squad, dealing with that and how we react when the first down comes because it will come. That’s football. So probably dealing with that and how we react.

“It’s been good. I’ve been up and down from Edinburgh quite a bit. I’ve got a seven-month-old baby, so we’ve been up and down. But no, I’ve loved it. It’s been really great and whenever I’ve met Aberdeen fans they’ve been really, good. It’s been a warm welcome."
