Although Aberdeen boss Barry Robson was frustrated with the final result against Celtic at Pittodrie this afternoon, there was still plenty that pleased with from his side’s performance.
“We’re up against a treble winning side with a top manager, but we were really brave, we tried to get after them. I think we made it a bit of a basketball game at times, it was the survival of the fittest at times. It was entertaining stuff for supporters.
“We wanted to have a go. We took risks at times but we wanted to go and win the game. A couple of individual errors cost us, but you have to give credit to the quality of the opposition as well. We tried to be aggressive and bring speed to the game, and I think it was as good an Aberdeen performance against Celtic that we’ve seen here for a lot of years.
“We tried to nullify the quality and speed they have and bring what we have to the game, and I think the fans saw that and came with us. Their second goal coming so soon after we equalised was frustrating, but we all make mistakes. Nicky Devlin was outstanding through the game, dealing with the pace of Maeda, but that was just an unfortunate moment. What was important was the way we played overall and how we tried to win the game.
“We’re not silly in how we approached the game, we were tactically bright, but we’re trying to build a team here. Bear in mind at the end of last season, we had eight loan signings here, so there’s been a lot of work to do. We’re trying to build a squad that is going to be at Aberdeen for a while and we are looking to add three or four more players to what we have while the window is open. The club are trying so hard to make that happen. We have to make sure these players coming in are right and will improve us.
“The fans want to see an exiting team, but more importantly they want to see a winning team.
“There are also players already in the building who are adding to what we had last season. Dante Polvara and Shayden Morris are two players I liked from the start, and that I wanted to work with. They didn’t get too many chances last season but they’re good players and we can make them better. We had Ryan Duncan come in to play wing-back today and he’s going to be some player as well.
“James McGarry will arrive in Scotland this evening. Angus MacDonald will train tomorrow, his first day back on the training field so he will need an intense couple of weeks to get him up to speed. Jonny Hayes will be out for six to seven days.”
